Driving home today I got the flashing coil and check engine light with major power loss. Fault code scan results were 5171 and 12896, both boost pressure control range not reached. The car has 19300 miles and is a 2013 Passat TDI SEL.

It also had fault codes for the radio and HVAC.

Scheduled the car to be picked up and hauled off Tuesday (that was the soonest they would come).

This is not looking good. I just got lucky it happened close to work. I need a reliable ride as I drive 275 miles away regularly and can't afford to be stranded.

Have the replacement turbochargers been more reliable?

Can you please provide the information requested in post #1? Also, part number and model number on your turbo would be very helpful.

Thanks and good luck! Replacement turbos have been more reliable.

Can you confirm the failed turbo part number e.g. 0005 or 0020?

Failed 230 miles away from home 2/8/14.
Miles on car at failure: 20250
Build date: Car at dealership
Corrective actions from dealership: They are going to replace the turbo - backordered
Outside air temps at failure: 10ºF
Failure warning signs, if any: I had an EGR (p20b8) code and reduced mileage on highway
Warning lights on dash/MFI: Flashing glow plug light, CEL
Problems since replacement: Still at dealer
Repair time: Still at dealer, backordered turbo and related parts.
Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: I took it to a dealership near Chicago - that said that they have had a bunch of then (4 that week) and it's probably OK to drive it back home (230 miles). I did. It was slow. I dropped it off locally and they said there's been 3 more since mine. In the midwest we have had very cold weather lately.
Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: Yes
If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil:
Are you the original owner of the car: No, I purchased it just 6 days before it went down. :(
Did you baby your car or not: No
Do you interrupt DPF regenerators: What? probably not.
How long is your daily commute: 11 miles round trip
Transmission: unknown
Failed turbo part number (if known): Don't know
Replacement turbo part number : -0020

EDIT (3/1/2014): I got it back yesterday (2/28/2014) so that was 20 days in the shop. I only had the car for 8 days before it broke so let's see how it goes. I'll update the turbo information above when I can check the car out.

The thing that took so long on backorde was NOT the turbo but the EGR pipe and associated gasket. At one point they said it was backordered to over 900 units and they came out of Canada. Recall that mine broke down in Chicago and I had to bring it 230 miles to from - at the advice of a VW dealership up there (PUGI - pronounced Poo-Ghe). So they might have had to do a little more work that usual.

Also: My loaner was an Audi A4 SPro Quattro. It was a kind gesture from them. It's a great car but small.

Six failures from 2/5/14 added

I have updated the thread and added the last six failures:

Not a good week for NMS turbo chargers, theses results are in line with some very cold weather throughout the country. Member dansluga reports that the two dealerships he was in while getting his car repaired report 7 turbo failures in the last week.

This brings the total reported turbo failures to 69 since thread inception 1/29/2013. At the current rate there is a turbo failure on this board every 5.5 days in an NMS Passat TDI.

Sorry for the delay, the dealer service department took a week to finally realize that it was the turbo that went bad.

Miles on car at failure: 19,145
Build date: 11/2012
Corrective actions from dealership: Replaced MAP sensor. Problem recurred. Tested vacuum system. They seemed to not want to believe the turbo was bad. They told me they were in communication with VW guru central the whole time and all their corrective actions were approved by them. Today I called and was told a new turbo would be there tomorrow.
Outside air temps at failure: 28F
Failure warning signs, if any: Some loss of power just prior to failure but no sounds or other signs anything was wrong.
Warning lights on dash/MFI: Flashing glow plug then CEL.
Problems since replacement: Still at dealer.
Repair time: ET: 2 weeks.
Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: No, but see corrective actions above.
Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: Yes
If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil:
Are you the original owner of the car: Yes
Did you baby your car or not: 95% Highway, not babied otherwise.
Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: I've not been able to tell if the engine was in regen ever.
How long is your daily commute: 550 mi each week end
Transmission (DSG/auto or manual): DSG
Failed turbo part number (if known): BW No. BV40E-0005, VW No. V500
Replacement turbo part number (if known): Not known.

I just got mine back and updated my info on post #247.

Total repair time was 6 calendar days since my service appointment, or 8 days since towing it in.

Replacement turbo is a -0020. Original was -0005 / V500.

Some others posted about making sure the dealer does an alignment afterwards. Sure enough, I had to do a U-turn on the way home after picking up the car as the steering wheel was off center.

Now back again to fix an under hood exhaust leak.

I am still waiting on mine. Been 11 days since I dropped it off :(

How long are these backordered? They said they are waiting on a "couple key parts".

EDIT: I got it back yesterday - 20 days total in the shop.

All turned back to VW. Now a 2017 Hundai Tuscon. Not a single squalk in 10k miles.
Think about it for a moment... One or two scattered failures and VW would probably ship the components immediately. Of course shipment would be from Europe but this could be done overnight.

But we're seeing here six failures within the same week that we know about. How many more this week? How many more in total? If VW is seeing repairs that cost between a quarter and a third of the total value of our vehicle in some instances, then wouldn't it be prudent for VW to find the root cause of these failures before tossing components randomly at the problem? This especially if the failure numbers are on the increase.

At this point I get the feeling that my dealer has been instructed to do everything he can to make me happy short of returning my car. I understand the dilemma for VW because they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. (That is assuming their question is the same as mine... As in what exactly is going on and what is the real solution?)

My offer at the moment is logical from my standpoint. I'll happily negotiate whatever the 15k miles I drove are worth. I believe VW has an obligation to make me whole for both this failure and their total failure to provide roadside assistance and I have every reason to believe they will.

Assuming VW steps forward and acts in a responsible manner, my intention is to drive a 2014 Passat away from the dealership. I hope a win/win situation for all concerned as VW would be free to inspect and diagnose the problem, then correct the defect. The vehicle could then be offered with an extended warranty and I'd leave the dealership with a fresh car and a full warranty.

I guess we'll see what happens. All I can say at the moment is that VW has a problem, they know it, and so far they've stepped up to the plate. Let's hope this is the way things go for all of us.

You'll have to talk to your dealership. Some folks are getting repaired and out the door in just a number of days.

Ourisman VW in Laurel, MD says they've had 2 turbo failures on the new Passat in their shop. "Pretty good, only 2 failures in 2 years" He says. Mines still ticking (either a ticking time bomb or a watch that will last a while).
