Turbo Pending Failure.

- Mileage: 218500
- MY 2012
- Warning Signs: Initial random lack of power leaving a stop until everything woke up. Progressed to random "ghost" howling after being run for a while, would go away if loaded and taken above 1800-2000 RPM that has now become very regular on pretty much every drive I make over about 15 minutes. NO CEL's, no other issues noted. Actuator tests fine, holds vacuum, responds to vacuum, vanes moving freely.
- Maintenance performed on schedule by yours truly.
- Service kits purchased from ID Parts
- Typically lightly drive with occasional heavier throttle usage
- Typical work commute 25-30 minutes
- DSG Trans
- 2nd Owner, owned since 92k miles in September 2015.
- Replacing with OEX turbo from ID Parts, no need for upgrades or anything.
- Car is freshly deleted (did as a stepping stone presuming this issue was the turbo itself).

Video of sound. Validated it's the turbo via stethoscope on compressor and turbine housings along with actuator. All three amplified the sound and nowhere else did, and when listening on the turbo parts it was very screechy and metallic sounding though visually there are zero signs of impeller contact with the housings.

So after further digging and comparing an impeller pic from not quite 3 months ago to now.......I overlooked a glaring smoking gun in lieu of some smaller signs.

Pic from mid July - Impeller edges showing some wear (not sure how that happened because I've owned this car for 9 years+ now and have been 100% astute about the maintenance schedule). A slight wear line on the housing around the impeller but I consider that normal (both the turbos on my C5 Corvette show the same thing).

Pic from a couple days ago. I keyed on in that wear line being wider than the imepller area and scored looking, and the outer impeller edges being shiny as if they'd touched. TOTALLY missed the stress crack at the 12 o'clock position.

She's a goner.

Just had my turbo replaced.
2013 Passat, DSG, not sure when it was built. I'd have to go outside and look.
Failed just before it it ticked over 100,000 miles
No idea whether software has been updated.
No idea the part number that came off; they kept it. (Warranty replacement)
Part number on the work order to install: 03L-253-010-J

Bought with lifetime drivetrain warranty, so I've had ALL service and repairs done by dealer, at recommended intervals, to avoid warranty issues.
Good thing, too -- This turbo replacement would have cost me about $3500 more than I ended up paying for all the work that was done.

It was a dealer car before I bought it, (45K miles) and was in immaculate condition.
Daily commute to work is about 7 miles each way. Many of my miles were long distance road trips.
I don't drive it hard, because I want it to last.

Failed in Sept, so weather was dry, and hot and humid.
Replaced the MAP sensor earlier this year.
It started going into limp mode, giving all kinds of dash lights, and boost codes.

The dealer replaced a cracked boost tube, which failed to fix. They did not diagnose further, and gave it back. I was a bit annoyed at that and let them know it.
They took it in again with orders to diagnose properly and not stop until they knew exactly what was wrong.
They found bad glow plugs and a faulty controller, which for some reason that only the engineers at VW seem to know, will put the car into limp mode.
They found abraded and broken wires in the harness, which needed to be replaced, because we seem to have lost the technology to splice wires.
Evidence of the bad harness manifested when the dash cluster would randomly go berserk with a light show and needles flailing randomly. A bit of a kick to the bottom of the dash area would sometimes make it stop for a while.
They replaced the boost sensor.
And they found that the boost actuator had failed.
They had my car for about three weeks, all told. At least they gave me a loaner for about half that time.
And this time, they actually did road tests to confirm that it was fixed before giving it back.

In the end, my total costs were around $3K. More than I wanted to spend, but still cheaper than buying a new car.

Hope this helps.
