Sold: 05 Passat Wagon TDI 2.0t, Texas, $11800

VolksWagen Passat Wagon TDI 2005 Diesel Made in Germany, not Mexico
This fuel efficient wagon is in excellent shape.
The 2.0l TDI engine has 247 ft/lbs of torque as low as 1750 rpm, and 137 hp. These engines are known for their performance, reliability and efficiency. It is significantly more powerful than the 1.9l available in Jettas and older Passats. The five speed tiptronic automatic transmission shifts fast and is very responsive for an automatic and has a manual mode too.
The leatherette interior, with all the GLS options make the car comfortable and safe, the leather is perforated for ventilation, seats adjust in height and lumbar support. Power windows, locks, trunk and fuel cap are all controlled from the driver’s seat. The moonroof has an automatic wind deflector.
Upholstery, ceiling and carpets are in great shape. I am including the VW floor mats that have the twist clips so they don’t move around. The car has side AND curtain airbags, so it is safe for driver and passengers, plus 5th generation ABS and Traction Control and electronic differential lock (disconnectable with a button on the dashboard). It has the safety of a great german car.
It also has the upgraded Monsoon sound system, with an factory installed amplifier in the trunk. The trunk (boot) is huge, and if you fold the back seats you have almost six feet of flat room.
I have the the switchblade remote, the valet key and manuals.
The car has 169,000 miles, but is in great shape, those are not very high miles for a diesel engine, they last a long time. My truck has 312,000 miles. There are very small rock chips on the front of the hood, everything else seems like new. I have the service records from official VW dealers.
The car had a big service by the dealer at 163,000 receiving new belts (timing one too), water pump, timing chain, filters, etc. So it should be good to go for many more miles without much expensive maintenance.
Book value is between $13,200 and $15000, after discounting $1900 for the miles. I am only asking for $11800.

Nice looking car. Has the balance shaft been upgraded to remove the chain drive one? Also, has the glow plug replacement/reflash been done yet?

That information will be useful here.

Hello, I am sorry, I don't know. I have the bills from the dealer, so I guess it was done if it was mandated by VW, One that had to do with the chain, tensioner, timing belt, water pump, etc, was over $2000. But I don't know.
Same with the glow plug, this is Texas, so they start without them too, they never gave me any problem. But I don't know what you are talking about, this engine is too complicated for me and I just let the dealer do the job. I did rebuilt the powerstroke in my truck myself, but his one I don't dare get my hands into. It runs good with the maintenance and the über expensive castrol synthetic oil VW mandates...

I'll try to simplify this, but there are a lot of threads covering what I mentioned in the B5 section.

Balance shaft: rotational device that is chain driven off the crankshaft to keep the engine from vibrating and to drive the oil pump. Chains have failed causing $8000.00 repair bills. Dealer's and VW balk at upgrading to VW supplied gear drives ($3000 cost).

See this thread: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=233651

The GP fix was to replace the OEM ceramic glow plugs that if one loses a tip can destroy the top end of the engine. VW has sent out letters to owners and will replace for free. Did you get a letter?

Just trying to help you here.;)

I did not, I will call the dealer on monday and find out though. Thank you very much.
By the way, I know what a balance shaft is, just not about this particular issue with this car :)

I am interested in your car, but what book are you using, NADA? KBB values with 170,000 k. mi. range from $10,700 - $13,110, depending on condition. Edmunds.com says $10,600 - $13,900 so pretty close.

If the seat covers have tiny holes in them (I presume so when you mention "perforated") then pretty sure it's leatherette and not leather.

Good luck with the sale, but I doubt you're going to get your asking price with it still needing the balance shaft fix. You'd probably be better off selling it on ebay or craigslist to less aware buyers! Either way, nice car and good luck!

The quick way to tell if an 04/05 Passat has leather seats is to look for the wood trim. No wood trim = no leather seats. The two came only as a package.

And, there were even a few GLSs made with cloth seats!

The $3k balance shaft replacement added on the asking brings the cost up to nearly $15k. If your asking is negotiable down to closer to 10k then the price would be quite good in my opinion.
In Texas the perforated pseudo-leather might be an advantage over the real leather anyway.
The thread heading says wagon, but there are several references to an "amplifier in the trunk", and "the trunk is huge". (unwilling to wait for photobucket files to load to see for myself). <edit: Finally got an image to load, wagon it is. end edit>

There are just too many to list....
For the record:

Even in Texas, the glow plugs most certainly get used every time the engine starts up (unless it is already at operating temp) and will continue to glow for several minutes.

The B5 was available with leather and leather with wood, but it is very rare to see leather only without the wood, and I have only ever seen that combo in a 1.8t car (not that it makes any difference).

I have to laugh at the "transmission shifts fast and is very responsive". Fast and responsive compared to what? A drunk turtle?

Not a bad price really, but it does most certainly need some serious attention at 169k miles.

Thank you for all the advise. I talked to the dealer, the glow plug upgrade has been made. The chain that drives the balance shaft has been replaced with an original new VW chain at 163,000 miles (along with many other expensive new parts). No modifications or upgrades done to the engine not mandated by VW. I corrected the posting.

The chains lasted 160K miles? Impressive indeed! Sounds like a well maintained vehicle.

That sucks. So basically they put more defective defunct parts in the engine. Nice.
