No mods. I was just on my spare for a weekend so I didn't drive faster than 50mph

I did the easy ventectomy on my 2003 Jetta. After doing that, I always filled until I saw a liquid level in the neck.
I haven't had luck doing this on my 2012. I fill it to what I think is full, but I've never seen the fuel gauge read full. I got this as a certified pre-owned 3 months ago, so it's still new to me.

You can't do the same ventectomy on a '12 as on your '03. Best you can do is fill it until you see clear fuel in the neck. I know that on my '15 if I wait a bit the fuel level drops and I can top it up a little more. But it's not like the older cars.
