Walking up to the car with kid in arms, having kessy on the rear handel would save me 1 second from first touching the front handel to unlock vs just grabbing the rear handel and unlocking. it doesn't sound like much by i swear this kid is part worm at how much he can contort his body around, having rear kessy would be nice.
Even better solution :D :

the kid loves it though.

Dropped the TDI off at the dealership and picked up my rental over the weekend. After my DEF level sensor fault returned I called the dealership in hopes to get a rental since I wouldn't pass the MA state inspection due this month. I expected the dealership to refuse and was prepared to call Customer Care to open a case but surprisingly they agreed to give me a car with no pushback.
It took about 4 months, but the dealer get a replacement tank installed and I picked up my car yesterday.

Welp, the only thing I did this past weekend was change out winter air for summer air. LOF is due in a few weeks and the timing belt in about 5k.

Unfortunately I traded in the Golf in for a Tiguan. I wish i could have kept it but it just doesn't work for our family anymore. With one baby, a second on the way, and a large dog, its just way too small. It was hard to let go of but it was a great 8 trouble free years. Drove over 150,000 miles with basically only regular maintenance, multiple 2,000 mile+ road trips, and camping with a travel trailer or roof top tent. There wasn't much we couldn't do with this car, until we needed a second car seat!

While I like the look of a cone air filter in the engine bay (and my friend likes the whooshy noises), today i decided to try switching back to the stock airbox, minus the snow grid (Texas, y'all!). I cannot believe how restrictive that snow grid looks. I also could not believe how dirty the back of that stock filter was, and pondered the meaning of the brass-and-steel-and-spring actuator for the little flap that lets dirty air in the back (I assume it's to help cold starts). For now, I'm leaving that in, but in a couple days I'll probably block it off.

So. I'm kinda floored by how the stock box improved throttle response and shifting. It's night and freaking day. From weak low end that I attributed to the CR190, now it's a decently strong pull from 2000 up. The flat response after upshift that I was kind of baffled by is greatly reduced- I still think it's due to EGTs after the cooler gets heat-soaked. But for 30 minutes of work, it's an incredible change. The cone filter was kind of on a whim, a friend suggested it when we did the build, but I really didn't know it would dull the engine so much. I'm looking forward to working on ejecting the DPF soon. Malone says it should be a Stage 3 tune, so...

The airbox intake from the engine compartment should only open when the snorkel is blocked. It's largely in case the snorkel gets clogged with snow. Not an issue for you. And I don't think the snow screen on the filter makes a difference in air flow. I've run my MKIVs with filters both ways, no noticeable difference.

Maybe I've got a bad actuator then? It sits open all the time, and that spring is really, really stiff. And there's a tube that runs back behind the head that pulls air not just from in the engine bay, but specifically from near the turbo, so I figured it had to be there to grab warm air.

I can't claim the screen made a big difference or not since I changed multiple things at once. My guess is that it would, but having suction on it and the fact that there's a filter right behind it would complicate that. I sure ain't going to have to worry about snow anytime soon, though, so it can wait a little bit before I do any experimenting on that.

Did you get the 7 seater Tiguan? I had a 2012 Tiguan TDI and it was the same size as our Golf, that was actually my only complaint of it. Maybe the newer Tiguans are bigger?

Today I replaced the timing belt on our Golf. I don't understand why VW puts the engine mount inside the loop of the belt. That was better on the Tiguan by the way, the engine mount went around the belt and did not get in the way of a tb-job.

I ended up with the 5 seater with AWD. The newer ones are considerably bigger. I originally went to the dealer because they had a 2016 for less than $12k but other than being heavily smoked in, the trunk looked almost identical to the Golf. Sensing my disappointment the sales person showed me the 2019 which feels like it has double the room even though its somewhere around 9" difference. The back seats can even be slid forward to increase trunk space.

Ok that sounds good, the older generation really was just a Golf on stilts.
I did have the sliding rear seat though, a nice feature. I'm sure you'll be happy with it!

I set up a new (old) laptop as a VCDS tool, tested it by clearing some old codes, and then went for a drive to see what would pop up. Ran another autoscan with the engine running (didn't think about it), cleared codes again, and went for a second drive. Noticed that my headlights were adjusted all the way down, and assumed that I had to come back and start work on adjusting them upward.

But, after shutting down and turning accessories back on, the headlights adjusted back up near normal... I need to adjust them up a little anyway so I'm digging into that tonight.

Due for a brake fluid flush, and with the rear pads getting a little thin (and rotors looking like crap) decided to do the rear brakes as well. Access to the big M14 carrier bolts was a lot easier than on the Mk5/6 cars - no problem getting a ratchet on them, just needed the flex head on the 24" ratchet to get sufficient leverage.

Weird that the pads are the same as the Mk4 rear pads, but there were no stamped-metal shim things - on either the OE ones, or included with the new Pagid pads (although the pads did include new 13mm bolts for caliper-to-carrier).

Had another mk7 car here today with "AFS error" reported by owner. Couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting that showing up in the 09-Central Convenience module where all of the lighting channels are located.

Turns out....it's only *most* of the lighting channels; found the error (cornering light RH) in the "Headlight Range" module (that module is up in the 40s somewhere).

Everybody who has considered retrofitting lighting package, or even full dla headlights, ahem... knows about the headlight range module 🤣

Oh those DLAs, I (dual, in each light) shutter thinking of them...
And that's only the startup dance.

I truly prefer the look of my Osrams, but should they ever need to be replaced, we understand what must happen.

I uploaded a corrected tune file on my new (to me) 6MT (it's @sardo_67 's) Golf and cleaned up some DTCs. Coded the lighting for ECE and city lights. I ran a few test runs on the local loop and found that there's definitely a fueling issue still present- consistently at 2500rpm I get a very low pressure and it goes to limp mode. If I baby it until above that, it'll pull very nicely up to 4000. VERY nicely- this GTD2060 feels like it really wants to go. I've pulled some logs and I'll post links to them. My other TDI had problems with low rail pressure at almost the exact same point, and that took replacing the rail to fix. Any other ideas what might cause it?

I've been light on the throttle due to the fuel issue, but the difference between the drive down and the runs last night was impressive. Even partial throttle above 3000 was pretty good and I can feel there's a lot more in there.

Puts out a fair bit of smoke when at moderate throttle, though, so the development tune might be just a little over-fueled. I'm hoping they can do a light haze after I get them some logging.

it did that to me at first but the tune that was on it when you got is didn't do that at all for me. previous one would drop the rail pressure and go into limp mode. i could watch it happen on Egauge i added to the dash

remind me this weekend i need to open up the bins from the blow motor and i probably have another rail in there if you need it.
also don't forget about the spare injectors, open them up and tune, you'll be having some real fun

Got rid of the 1-¼" hitch receiver and installed the big-boy 2" Ecohitch / TorkLift unit from e-trailer.com

Why....? I have a Kuat Sherpa bike rack (1-¼"), but when it's on the car, it's kind of in the way, so I picked up a Kuat Pivot that swings the rack off to the side of the car, and it's only available for 2" receivers. I had purchased a 1-¼"-->2" adapter, but....why half-ass it when you can do it right, amirite people?

Installation was pretty straight-forward, apart from having to up-size the cut-out I'd previously made in the lower part of the rear bumper cover to accommodate the larger receiver. Also had to move the "kick sensor" for the power tailgate (which continues to work flawlessly roughly 17% of the time 🤦‍♂️) due to the crash bar protruding a bit further back. But other than that, pretty straightforward. Just follow the instruction/suggestion to thread a couple of M8x1.25 bolts from the BACK of the frame rail so you can hang the receiver / crash bar to get it into position.

(Speaking of e-trailer....some online places are kind of a PITA to deal with....never know if/when something has shipped, zero communication on shipping timeline (yeah, I'm looking at you, FCPeuro), but e-trailer....I mean, top-notch in every single regard. I was ordering from Canada to US address, so they called just to confirm that I was a legit order (never a bad idea); I missed the call, but called the number they called in on, had a human within 20sec., who knew exactly what was going on, confirmed the details, then I had a shipping confirmation a couple minutes after I got off the phone. Both the email and my order status on the website had the UPS tracking info RIGHT THERE. Couldn't have been more impressed.)

So my CRUA 2015 Golf was at 127,000 miles and what a great time to do a timing belt and water pump replacement. Job went fairly easy without any problems just dealing with all the lines in the way, my son did most of the wrenching, he was eager to jump in, he owns an MK6 GTI.

Well, on the trip down I did get a few limp modes, and at a midpoint check I had new fuel rail pressure codes, though they happened at some higher RPMs. I'm thinking maybe a pressure regulator, or a 2700 bar sensor- i was planning on that anyway, so it's a good first step. I'll get it sorted one way or another- by Thursday I should be able to get it regg'd and then do some regular driving and get some logging done without annoying the neighbors!

The boost log looks a lot like the "symptom" I had when doing a bigger turbo. It was all tuning related, and mostly due to incorrect requested airflow. I'd be logging lambda as well, anything below 0.9-1.0 is going to take a toll on your oil over time.
The fuel pressure issue could very easily just be simple tuning adjustments needed vs hardware issue. If you log the regulator in addition to the high pressure sensor nominal and actual, you'll get the full picture of what it's trying to do.

It took months to get anything worthwhile from my previous tuner and was like pulling teeth to get a single tune update once a week.
@Xtremefunky got the car running beautifully in just a single weekend of remote tuning. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to reach out to him.

Also, the newer MPPS v22 flashing tool, I can flash new files in 54 seconds. It's lightning fast, and thus allows for updates or tuning file swaps without needing to be on a battery charger. I can do a few datalog pulls, send via Whatsapp, and load new updated tune file all while out around my "datalogging road" :)

Thanks! You might recognize those parameters, those presets were the first thing I went for when I got this home. I've paid Malone for a bit of adaptation of this particular tune, but if they can't be responsive I will reach out to @Xtremefunky (heck, who am I kidding- I'll probably end up reaching out at some point). For now I'll add the lamdba, do a couple brief test runs tonight, and try to get an inspection/reg done tomorrow so I can go on actual roads with this and try to get more.

with it running normally most of the time I was hoping it was not a bad sensor or regulator, so this gives me a little hope. I've noticed that when I can get into the throttle it puts out a LOT of smoke, so could that be a symptom of air mismatch? Malone did say they would need some logs from this to refine the tune, so I'm not very worried or upset yet.

Another question: Does anyone think springing for the Darkside 2700 bar sensor is a good or bad idea? I have yet to check with Malone on whether they've got an adaptation for that. For now I'm sticking with stock injectors, but have the CP3 pump in and coded for. The DS website says the linearization data is different and has to be coded for.

Quick and dirty log pulled. Only pulled in 1st gear on a very local street, trying to not annoy the neighbors. I added lambda and tried to record multiple runs, so I think the log is a mess. As before, at part throttle, it doesn't trigger limp mode. The last pull definitely triggered it, but much higher up than I expect, now somewhere near 4k. What isn't clear to me is why it triggered- suddenly the actual fuel rail pressure and the lambda begin dropping, but that's before there's a spike in the nominal quantity. The ITT keeps rising, though- is that normal for there to be a lag? Looking at the timestamps it's less time than I expected, so I guess that's normal. I tried to use a steady throttle application to avoid creating transients.

Quick and dirty log pulled.........
could there be a fuel line kinked or something coming from the tank or lift pump issue?
i never hit anything or had fuel issues with it but if the fuel starvation issue isn't under the hood then maybe chase the lines back to the tank.
