Starter. I hate it.

Ok, so my Jetta died after my kid went out to get something and left the door cracked, killing the battery. I jumped it the following morning, and ever since I’ve had a mess of electrical problems. Windshield wipers quit working, hatch button quit working, door locks occasionally won’t work.
And then the starter. I drove out of town for work, parked the car for the day, came back and it wouldn’t start. Lights came in, could hear the fuel pump running, but not even a click.
I had a mechanic pick it up, they replaced the starter, and they still can’t get it to start. I’m sure that all of this has to be connected, I just don’t know enough to figure it out. Any ideas?
P.S. all fuses have been checked and are good as well.

Oh boy….. kinda Similar thing happened to me, an idiot who installed the new battery the wrong procedure fried the main fusible link in my MK6 JSW and 2015 Passat B7 on the same week.

Replaced both and no issues ever since.

check your main fusible link. Its a $40 part located on the fuse box in the engine bay on the drivers side.

Yeah my fusible link had some corrosion plus blown, it was perfect timing to replace and clean up the connectors. Ever since, she starts quick and beautifully. Before that, she struggles to start and throwing weird dash lights. She was a former buyback car that sat 2 years plus humidity. So those adds up.

Not typical christmas tree lights that you see on the dash that tend to be bad abs / speed sensor.

Totally different lights back and forth like if it is kinda random.

Did you have any of the other electrical components stop functioning? I only ever was able to clear some of it by disconnecting then reconnecting one of the battery terminals. Except the wipers, still can’t get them to turn on.

I think I’d check electrical connections, particularly grounds. There are 3 relatively easy to access under the air box and one in the driver’s footwell somewhere.
Oh and is your hood closed when trying the wipers? They won’t work if it is open.

Everything the OP mentions goes through the BCM/J519, including the Terminal 50 relay, which controls the starter motor. Did the shop scan the wagon for VAG fault codes ? --g

Hood was closed. I found out about that oddity a few days ago lol I’ll try and have those checked as well! Thanks!

So, the mechanic called, apparently they bent a pin on the connection for the starter. It at least starts, but I’m still checking the fusible link as well as the relays to fix the other issues. Thanks guys and gals!

How the heck can they bend it? I took my starter out few times and its easy to connect it back without bending anything.

The remaining issues described in your first post are power/controlled directly by the BCM (J519) mounted above the driver footwell. Find someone local a VAG-specific diagnostic scan tool like VCDS, OBDeleven, Carista, or any number of other similar tools (or get your own) and scan for fault codes in Address 09 - Central Electrics. Moisture in the BCM or a faulty ground can be problematic here, too. --g

As far as I know they didn’t. And guess what. Car wouldn’t start today. Same thing as before. I’m going to try and find a relay locally, start with the cheapest repair first.

It was in a town I’m unfamiliar with, I went with coworkers suggestions. The dude was a clown, but apparently it came bent.

If I do this and need to replace the BCM, can I do the coding myself with a VCDS I buy from Ross-tech? Is there any tutorial?

The funny thing is, I went to pick up the car, battery was dead, and the lube guy came out to jump it and did this.

Generally, yes, you can. You'll need to capture/save the long coding of the current BCM before removing/replacing. But before you pull your BCM, scan and post the *full* VCDS auto-scan here inside a "code" block. Note that the Tiguans of the same generation share our BCMs. --g

The BCM is very easy to replace and coding is just as easy if you don’t have to change the lighting scheme on a used BCM. Changing lighting might take a few extra steps and some precautions but only up about one level of difficulty. Just don’t try to change it with the battery low. Ross Tech has all the information on their WIKI.

Ok, so now trying to order a replacement, new or used I don’t particularly care, how do I find the right one? I found the BCM under the steering wheel area, but don’t see a part number. I’m assuming I also don’t want to pull it until I’ve acquired the coding on it.

A Sportwagen with midline package takes a 5K0 937 086. High line package is a 5K0 937 087. There is a letter suffix, originally my 2010 had an 086E which I swapped for an 087T when I installed HID headlights. You will see what version you have via VCDS or by reading the label on the BCM.
I think you might need a letter equal or higher than what you have at present. The differences are both hardware and software, so if for example you have rain sensing or kessy that might not be supported by lower or older BCM.
One of the differences between the 086 and 087 is the headlight switches. The 086 will fail when subjected to the inrush current of HID headlights.

Here, a low-line BCM (halogen headlights, no fog lights) p/n 5K0-937-084-E. The equivalent mid-line (adds front fogs) is 5K0-937-086-H and hi-line (adds HID headlights) is 5K0-937-087-K:

We can use mid- and hi-line BCMs in place of a low-line, but not vice versa. As noted in post #19, look at Tiguans for potential donor replacements. --g

Anyway, you have a base line with this auto-scan -- clear all DTCs, drive the car a bit, rescan, & report the DTCs that come back. --g

I actually can’t drive it. The car won’t even turn over. New battery, new starter, I’ve narrowed it down to the BCM based on every other issue I’ve had.
Does this auto scan give me all the codes I need to replace the BCM?

Still, you should clear all codes, in any case, since you have a base line report.
The important point is that some (many?) are old DTCs that may not be relevant to your current no-start condition.
