I'm in.

The last SF bay area GTG was in May at Dparnell's house. The usual 6 people were there. Hopefully with all the new members, we'll have a larger turnout.

Hey, DTY, I thought it was actually early June...was it really May? How time flies when you're shooting up the neighborhood...

How about one sometime in December? I know it's holidays and all, but, I don't think Scott(StealthTDI) will be back until Dec. sometime.

I'm interested though, so I'll keep chacking back.

Hello everybody

I just bought a 2002 Golf TDI on Saturday (after waiting about 3 months!). I'm loving it and can't wait to start some mods. I'm going to put some DIO's in (Dealer Installed Options), but want a more personal touch. I live in Hayward and would like to meet up with other folks around the bay area with TDIs.

ciao

Hmm, a biodiesel GTG sounds interesting. I know there's one in SF, are there others? We seem to have wide ranging respondants to this round of GTG, and hardly any old-bies, so this is a good sign that TDIs are actually getting into CA, whooohooo! I'm agreeable to pretty much anywhere that isn't like a half day's drive somewhere, although, since DTY and kwhiner are in the Reno area, that might be sort of a fun drive. Should we meet at some seedy truck stop??

DTY, I can do the 8th. Can anyone else do the 8th? Where the heck are the other "standard" guys that usually jump all over these invites? Are they all GTG'd out? LOL

Hey y'all

Unfortunately I won't be around on the 8th, but would like to keep up on the latest happenings... I'll just lurk about on the discussion forum until the next meeting I guess.

Biodiesel...you people rock! Just as I was reading about the Maui and Seattle biodiesel projects, I was thinking it would be really great if we had that here in the SF bay area. Let's try to make it happen.

As far as how I got my TDI in California: it was a real pain, but worth it. There were a few 2001 Golf TDI GLS's around the bay area when I started looking back in July, actually. Hayward VW and Dublin both had one each. I decided I really wanted a 2-door GL (yeah, I know I'm really picky), so I waited until the 2002's started rolling in in September and talked to several dealerships. Broadway VW in Oakland said they'd try to pull it off for me, since they new that the allocation for California was something like less than 4 vehicles. So I placed my deposit back in September, giving me the first right of refusal; and then they started looking around for one. Apparently the one they were able to get for me was headed for a different dealership, but because the dealer advocated for me, they were able to intercept it and send it to Oakland. It arrived about a week ago, and I went to buy it last Saturday. They wanted a $5000 markup but I talked them down to $3700, for a total price of $20,650. With taxes and a 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty, the price OTD (out the door) was $24k, but I had to go with their financing plan. Pretty good, all in all.

Now I'm looking into mods. I just had the tinting don today; I put in the aluminum shift knob; and mudflaps/splash guards are waiting to be put in.

take care

I moved to CA from DC 9 months back with a Y2K Jetta TDI. My TDI will approach timing belt change in around 2/3 months. Can anyone suggest a good mechanic/VW shop that you are comfortable with. Thanks

Hi, mediko; I was thinking that a TB change GTG would be a really good one to have (as well as a biodiesel GTG), as there are several folks in our area that I think would do a darn good job of changing a TB, and help others learn and save at the same time. Let's see if anyone's up for it on this thread; otherwise New Dimensions in Santa Clara should be competent enough to do a belt change on a TDI. I don't know what the cost would be, though.

Wow! I hadn't checked this folder in a while and lo and behold, there's a gaggle of us!

Cool, 12/8 is good for me. I guess we should figure out details of where and what to do.

I was poking around, another possibility is Red Line oil company in Benicia. It's about an hour's drive from the south bay. I'll send them an email.

the other possibility is a biodiesel run. I'm not sure how the unattended biodiesel station operates. I bet though, we could get a news story on TV for that one. Imagine a line of TDI's queuing up for biodiesel in San Francisco. Might be interesting.

Sorry haven't gotten around to posting, but if you guys want to come up this way can probably get discount rooms at "Western Village Inn/Casino". Rate would probably be about $25/night. Just need some notice for head count so I can set it up with the Hotel supervisor. Otherwise can come to the SFBA and very tempted to try some biodiesel for sure.

Any volunteers for hosting this event? I would, but I'm 250 miles from the bay area.

Kevin, if you want to try B20, I have a Western Energetix card.

Can I join you guys? I'm in So. Cal. and just got my Jetta TDI wagon. I need an excuse to figure out what kind of gas mileage I'll get going up north (on one tank of course). What does GTG stand for anyways (can't find any references in the FAQ). I'd like to learn about the mods available too.

Would be more than happy to have you come up this way. Looks like a group of mostly new kids, so will be good mix. Just need a place at this point.

Well, if we're (mostly) interested in biodiesel, we should start off with someplace that has it, right? So I know (from DTY) that there's one in SF, are there others in more interesting places? Reno/Sparks sounds kind of intriguing, too, since Kevin graciously offered great rates on rooms. I too look forward to meeting new blood, especially Eric w/ his TDI wagon. BTW, Eric, I can almost guarantee you that your southbound mileage will be better than your northbound mileage.

So what's it gonna be folks?

I should be able to do something December 8th, keep me in the loop. Sorry I missed the last GTG, but I did end up getting chipped anyway via mail order...WOW! Makes my little 99.5 Golf GL sprint like a scalded rabbit ;-).

Regarding a biodiesel GTG: It would not be convinient because individuals need to go through CytoCulture Int'l who is brokering the sale of B100 on the behalf of World Energy and Olympian Oil. The B100 is sold in increments of 100 gallons on a prepaid basis. In other words, you can't drive up to the pump and fill up with B100. You need a Cytoculture cardlock card. My CFN card will not work at the biodiesel pump.

I suggest we meet somewhere on the penisula and have a meet/greet/tinker/drive/eat gtg.
