Looking at the B4 part, it’s fatter and shorter. What’s special about the A4 part?

The first 2 vendors I looked up carry the correct 357407182 bushings.... ID parts and fcp. This bushing fits the A2-A4 chassis.

When you press these in, it’s a very tight fit, especially on the fore/aft direction. Unless there’s something I’m not seeing with the bushing in your pic, I’d think it wouldn’t work. I’d think it’d be loose. I didn’t look too hard, but the image I find, is always the one on the left.

I’m a little confused... when you mention A4, do you mean VW A4 chassis or Audi A4?

The one on the left, is what I’m used to seeing on VWs, and what I’ve removed from my 2 B4s. B4 chassis would pretty much be the same suspension as the A2 and A3. The bushing to the right, is what I assumed an Audi A4 bushing, and I’ve never seen that one.

ID Parts and I researched exactly what the odd ball bushing is, and the conclusion is, we don't know. No VW part number on it. The control arms had a VW part number 357407157 which can't be identified. It seems that sometime in its previous owners lifetime the control arms were swapped out and we just don't know from what. I pressed the typical bushing (on the left) in and called it a day.

I just googled the control arm pn and it appears to be from a B3. B3 should be the same bushing as the B4, so I have a feeling the incorrect bushing was installed.

The typical left front B3/4 VR6 (plus suspension) control arm is 357407151A, however, there are known cases where odd part numbers do show up in the US. Although your part number doesn't show up in the US on VW dealer ETKA it does show up elsewhere so it's probably valid.

The weird bushing is another thing altogether...
