98 Jetta ahu/1z no power

Hello I’m new to the tdi world. Have owned a few diesel trucks so I’m kind of familiar. My 98 Jetta has 113,xxx just had timing belt done. Was running great and suddenly it runs but has no pep, and going up hills It slows way down. Which made me think it could be vacuum/ electrical issue? Only code it’s showing is 1403 which is the egr system. Checked most vacuum lines visually and they seem fine, and maf sensor is clean. My main questions were where should I start with my diagnosis? And can the egr being clogged cause this issue?

It’s called “limp mode” and it’s not uncommon on a vehicle that needs maintenance.

Awesome thank you! Looks like I’m going the egr route. Any info (pics,videos) on taking the cooler and manifold apart? I feel confident in doing it just don’t want to cause any more problems during disassembly

one of my B4 has a similar issue but it does not throw a code? Im guessing maybe Clogged CAT?
