Obvious diagnosis is some kind of short / defect with the multi purpose switch or a stuck relay or ??? Anyone have first hand experience to help narrow down the areas for investigation?? Removing the fuse has been the short term solution but obviously that is not satisfactory

It's probably the relay. I think it's #377. If you crook your neck enough, it can be found just below the steering wheel. It's about 1" tall x 3" wide and 3" deep

I replaced the stalk, but it turned out to be the relay.

You can try brushing the relay and wire brushing the socket. Also some sore of electrical spray is available. Those might give short term relief.

You can find the relay on eBay, or from someone else on the board. New I think they are about $80. Used as cheap as $10

Thankyou , exactly the advice I was looking for. And funnily enough I think I've got a couple of those units as spare in the garage.... I didn't realise they were part of the wiper circuits. Thanks again.
