Guessing a bad/leaky injector. Cold start takes about 10 seconds, once its warm it fires immediately. She has about 265k miles with original injectors. Here is the VCDS data:

I'm guessing late timing or an air leak.

New problem? Always been this way? Just bought the car?

I've had the car for 12 years now, always has started right up. just did a total vacuum line replacement and replaced the G81 sensor (fuel temp) because I was getting a code for that. The only other intermittent code I get is this:

How's your intake manifold? You clean it recently?

I had it open a long time ago, probably been too long...

You think a clogging intake would give me these types of starts? I was a little concerned with the #4, seems the most off from the other cylinders

Did you replace the seals on top of the pump?

Are you seeing big air bubbles in the return line upon start-up?

I did replace the top gasket, no bubbles. By the way I had the starting issue before doing the G81, I was hoping that would've been the fix.

When you say cold, what does that mean? Florida folks think 60 is cold, some Canadians go for a picnic when it hits 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

And what's your IQ read when the car is warm?

A restricted intake doesn't usually cause a hard start, but it could. Just pull off the elbow to the egr valve and look inside.

If it’s the first start of the day, I’d say air getting in the fuel line. Those numbers don’t look that bad.

So not necessarily cold start, but first start. The temps range from 30deg F to 70deg F lately, (I'm in DC) I have a new "t" for my next fuel filter change, ill get that in there and see if it makes a difference.

Do you have the clear fuel lines for your supply/return to the filter?

I have the stock clear supply, black return. I've been meaning to replace them with both clear.

Where is your injection timing? Pic of the graph. When my timing was off it'd start great cold but when warm it felt like it tried to run backwards...

still need to remember to plug in vcds and check timing... I keep remembering right as I get into bed. I did notice some soda bubbles in the clear line today, so I changed the filter and tee. We'll see how she starts in the morning.

Did it start doing this shortly after a timing belt change? How certain are you of the cam timing?

It started hard starting about 6 months ago. No specific maintenance was done to trigger it, I think it came on gradually.

Smoke and excess bubbles could both be from the extended crank/no start.
I would;
1. Inspect timing belt
2. Time the motor (crank, cam,IP) pump hole should be close
3. Fine tune to center of graph using VCDS, optional-use adaptation to advance timing
If I read right, you're about due for the timing belt system, no awards for getting the full 100k.

Bob, you got a good point. Might be time to lay up and stay out of the bunker... timing belt might fix it if done properly.

Have you also thought about a compression test just to see what the holes are making

so it started much easier today, but still slightly delayed and still smokey, although less so. I think at this point its acceptable. I do realize I am due for a t-belt. when I adjusted the timing last night the belt did look ok, no cracking or shiny spots. I think I am going to try to wait on that project until after the summer. I do think my rubber fuel lines need replacing, lots of cracking. I no longer have the soda bubbles. since doing the filter and thermostatic T, I have a 1" long bubble that forms in there.

I do want to check the compression with a gauge, but I did the audible check and the cranking sounds consistent, no speeding up or slowing down

I don’t think you have a compression issue unless you have had something recently happen, IE gone through a deep water puddle ETC.
Your still getting air in there if you’re getting a 1” bubble.
Try using Vaseline on the t fitting, be generous , see if that helps.
If not there than possibly the head seal on IP is allowing air in when it’s off.

My tuned car has had a bubble for close to 100k miles...I chased it for a while replacing almost everything in the fuel line...gave up...car runs fine
