When is the turbo supposed to kick in?

I have noticed with my PD powered Jetta that the turbo seems to be whistling away even while idling - while this may be good for power delivery, it seems unusual. Am I hearing something else?

My ALH powered Golf clearly does not have any detectable turbo whistle until 1500+ rpm.

might be time for a doggie collar to fix a boost leak whistle or maybe the intake shroud wore a hole in your inter cooler...
Do you get frequent MIL when you stomp the go pedal?

Well...it's a TDI so its power band runs from roughly 1200rpm and goes clear up to 1800 LOL .

no MIL so far, but the car is driven by my wife and I doubt that she ever stomps the go pedal :D

I get a definite kick in the pants at 2100 rpm. I am guessing it is set like my powerstroke because it behaves the same.

Stock exhaust on PD (muffler is in place)? You're hearing this from inside the car or outside the car?

Car is stock and I have only noticed from the outside.
at least you've ruled out the HVAC system :D
when idling, the EGR would be at max duty cycle so maybe poke around there

This thread has gotten a bit old, but I finally figured out what was going on.

Looking under the hood the other day I noticed that the intake hose to the egr was not sitting properly - the metal collar on the hose had failed and it had come pretty close to falling off.

Nearly 150 bucks + taxes for a new hose (ridiculous!!), and all seems to be well.

Lensdude, you suggested this was my problem back in January, but I was too ignorant to understand what you meant by "doggie collar", and too proud to ask. I paid the price :-(

They'll whistle like crazy when the exhaust starts to rust and develop holes before the catalytic converter.
