Today we took our beloved 2009 Jetta TDI w/123,xxx miles to Wallace VW in Stuart, FL for our $12,800 VW buyout. We had purchased the car for only $11,777 three (3) years ago and at 82,xxx miles. We had also received $1,000 in two loyal gift cards several months ago. 
Well a few blocks down the road at Wallace Chevrolet, also today we bought a mint condition, one owner, 2014 Chevy Cruze LT will ONLY 25,000 miles for a mere $10,500!!!
The Cruze is nearly IDENTICAL in size to our old Jetta TDI. It is rated at 38 MPG highway with its 1.4L turbo engine, so I expect fuel economy very close to our old TDI, and with regular gas that much cheaper than diesel, I expect fuel expenses to be the same as always.
BTW: Our son still drives our old '98 Jetta TDI at over 250,000 miles! Still runs GREAT! (I was Ric Woodruff here way back in those old days)
