Tire Question

i have a quick question about a set of winter tires I have in storage for the winter months. I would like to put these tires on my 2003 golf this winter and put the all seasons up, since they are shot. The winter tires are from a 2002 Passat.

the size is the same, i don't see any issues...

As long as the tires are the same size and load rating they should be fine. Bear in mind snow tires are not meant for high speed runs of long duration. They will overheat.

Thanks, I don't foresee that ever happening, I don't drive fast and it is mostly short distances.

The bolt pattern isn't the same, so you have to get the tires off the old wheels and onto the new ones, or get a set of wheels to put the winter tires on. Never was a fan of swapping tires on and off rims twice a year, so got sets of steel ones for the winter.

Are you absolutely sure they are not the same? I'll probably check tomorrow some time. Figure I would ask before I went there yesterday.

See if you can find the 16" OEM steel at a salvage yard. They run less than $50 each, and you'll not find anything 16" alloy less than that. At least you have the tires, that's ~100 each saved. Anything from 1999.5-2003 Beetle, Jetta or Golf works, plus you may get 1 season from the mismatch set if really tight on cash.

I called the locak junker yard over here and he had a set of 4 OE 15" steel wheels, im going to look at them and probably pick them up. Why would I need to go 16's?

If you want to use the tires from the passat, aren't those 16" tires, which need 16" wheels. The OEM Steel for the 03 Beetle was 16". You could get 15", but you need tires then too.

Why is everyone talking about 16" wheels? B5/5.5 Passats did come with 15" wheels in the US, with 195/65r15 tires

Plus, the OP never specified the size of the tire on his Passat.

Looks like the links don't work now, my winter tires I have are 195/65 r-15. These should fit my golf as well. Well according to tire rack they do.

Got a set of wheels from the 99 Passat we traded on the current Jetta. The wheels are exactly the same as the steel 15" spare that came in the Jetta, especially after ripping off the silly "Don't exceed 80 kph/50 mph" stickers when the spare tire is an 195/65HR15.

The Bridgestone Blizzak's mounted on the old steel wheels are S, T, or H speed rated unlike the usual Q rating for snow tires. Anyone who needs snow tires and drives 100 mph and is not competing in the WRC is a maniac IMHO.

Link wasn't working so I took a guess based on the 2000-03 models I've seen having mostly 16" from the factory. Good to know they also had 15", and I have 15" winter tires, but bought new wheels for them, just easier to have Tire Rack do the whole job.

Glad it worked out.
