Timing belt costs and parts ?!

At 40k my jetta auto needs the timing belt. The dealer quotes 625.00 and another 90.00 for the fuel filter.
I got boned the last time at the dealer & don't want to go back. I checked other repair shops and they are less expensive.

My question - what actual parts should they change in order to get a good quote and coverage for my warrantee?
I get a price of 395 for the TB change and 75 for the filter from a VW specialist.

Parts ? 1) timing belt, 2) tensioner roller, 3) pulley. - should each of these be replaced? I also have a shop telling me to change the seals while they are in there to prevent leaks. Any thoughts?

www.dieselgeek.com sells the TB Kit for A4 $180 shipped (80k belt and tensioner and all seals), A3 $129.75 plus shipping (belt, tensioner, seals). They also have fuel filters for $37, a filter change takes about 5 minutes of your time.

For $625, I think your stealer is hosing you either for parts or time. And for $90, is their fuel filter made of dieselfiltonium?

My local dealer charges $400 CDN for a timing belt change including tensioner, parts and labour.

Seems to me the specialist is reasonble the other place is not. Tell them so.

My local dealer Belleville VW in Belleville Ontario Canada, is quoting c$399 (+tax) to replace the belt and all the other items mentioned. He charges c$100 more if it's an automatic.Takes more time. He seems to have a very good reputation in the area. Many people come from Kingston (50 miles) & Toronto (120 miles) to sevice their people's car.

I got a TB, tensioner, AND alternator belt changed for $304US, out the door.They even washed the car. Sterling Volkswagen; Abilene, Texas.
