Starts up, shuts off ( immobilizer issue )

I have been reading thru the forums for this issue we have on our 2006 Jetta TDI. 5sp and 150,000 miles. Doesn't show any codes.
The first time this happened was a couple of weeks ago. Wife drove it to work just fine. Got in at the end of the day to come home and it would start up and run a couple of seconds then shut off every time the key was turned to start.
I trailered it home and it started right up and ran fine for me to unload it off the trailer and put in the garage. I changed the 460 relay just in case. Drove it into town yesterday and all was fine. Went to start it this morning and same issue - starts up fine, runs a couple of seconds and shuts off.
Where do I trouble shoot next?
Thanks!!

UPDATE--- just found this in the "sticky" section
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=1972387&postcount=8

I tried the spare key and the car runs just fine. Changed back to the main key and same old issue. So the key seems to be the problem. Thanks for that sticky info!!
**very strange to me, in looking closely at the main key, I can see no discernible wear. The battery also checks at as good.
??
OK, so everything points to the immobilizer program chip in the main key.

Is there anything magnetic on the key ring containing the non-working key?

No, I just checked to make sure.

My wife asked me to try the Valet key (dumb me) and it started the car right up and ran fine. No shut off.

So I am assuming the chip is in the actual metal key and not the electronic part of the two part fob ? Yes

Wonder if the original metal key can be re-programmed instead of buying a whole new fob and key, having the key cut and then programmed? (ok if undamaged)

At the dealer, they want 115.79 for the fob, 101.44 to cut the key and then 152.00 to program it. Plus tax - around 369.23 plus tax #$@!

On line, the fob+key+ cutting = 139.99 + 10.00 shipping.

You can rent the tools for re-programming or take to the dealer. (152.00+)

This write up on another web site gave a lot of good info=

Also found that Kerma TDI can do an Immobilizer delete if you send them your ECM.

(159.00 plus shipping them your ECM)

Search on Facebook for Clusters: By Litke. Send him a message and ask him about an IMMO delete and any other cluster mods you might want such as the temp gauge displaying the actual temperature and he will tell you a price. He did a bunch of stuff for me for $100 which included return shipping.
