Just wondering what everyone is seeing relative to their mpg on these Passat 6 speed manuals....Highway/city/mix?

I am averaging 30 mpg with 100% city (10 mph avg) on this tank. My commute is very short and it takes a while for it to warm up. On the first tank, I saw 38.6 mpg with maybe 40% city, 60% hwy. On the highway, it definitely returns solid 40's into low 50's depending on your speed and conditions. Beating the 43 mpg EPA hwy estimate is a piece of cake.

Would like to tell you, but my passat tdi 6mt is sitting in a rail car. Was loaded on 10/5 and am still waiting. But when I get it, commute is 30% city 70% highway in social so I will have traffic, I will let you know.

Are these values you guys are listing per tank averages or just trip mileages? cause I've seen 20mpg and a 58mpg on my 2010. yet my tank averages have been around 43-48mpg.

It does look like the Passat will really shine on long 65 mph highway runs where it'll eat the miles and post great numbers! all fingers crossed!

Guy, thanks for the fuel economy feedback. Sounds like this new motor iteration gets only ~2 MPG less than a 2006 BRM. Having a lifetime average of 47.2 for 182K on mine, I expect to be pleased with the new Passat.

Hey, I'm representing the city MPG people, proving that a TDI is not strictly a highway car. Averaging 29.9 mpg with an average speed of 11 mph is better than lots of hybrids, I bet. :)

Only through about 1/2 a tank right now and haven't confirmed mpg via old fashioned hand calculations...But, it looks like this 6 speed manual Passat is going to crush the TDI DSG Golf in fuel efficiency, at this point based solely on the MFD and computers reporting on approx mileage to empty I'm averaging 45+mpg in combined driving, if the MFD is accurate the Passat is amazing on the highway, I think with a little care I could hit 50 mpg driving 65-70mph, matter of fact I've been averaging 47-48mpg on my daily commute which includes city/stop and go/bumper to bumper/highway cruising at 65-70+ when possible, and break-in driving. I know this route very well and I'm seeing 5-10 mpg+ with the Passat on certain highway stretches. The MFD on my Golf was always dead-on accurate so I'm hoping this one is too. This car is a highway machine, there is no way you could only get 43mpg like the EPA states, heck it will get 43mpg going up a slight grade at 70mph

I concur that on the highway, the 6MT rocks. 1950 rpm at 70 with a slippery 0.29 coefficient of drag. When I get some free time (ha!), I'll do some logging of the steady state fuel consumption at different speeds in both directions (to minimize wind and elevation change effects). Even driving 100% city stop and go, never going faster than 40 or so, mine is slightly over 30 mpg.

2012 Passat TDI with 6-speed manual
Just took delivery a week ago of a 2012 Passat Highline TDI with 6-speed, nav system and sport package (i.e. 235/45 R18 tires). Drove to Toronto and back on the 401 & Hwy 2. Key trip stats: 582km to and from Toronto, driving at 110 - 130 as needed; 29.4 litres to fill up on return; 5.05l/100km total, which pleased us no end. Delighted with the power and quiet comfort as well as with the thriftiness of the new Passat. Wish the leather sport seats were a bit more Audi-like, but then I didn't spring for the Audi. Very satisfied to date.

Should have added that 5.05 l/100km equals 46.58 MPG US or 55.94 MPG CDN. This seems about standard for what others are reporting - but very agreeable nevertheless.

Very nice! And your configuration is exactly what I would have gotten ... if it were available in the US. :( We only get the SEL (comparable to your Highline) with the DSG and only get the 6MT in SE (comparable to your Comfortline). Oh well, VW missed out of the extra markup from the sunroof, nav, etc.

Wow, I'm getting 5l/100k on my Yamaha FJR 1300. Maybe the flywheel is 200 lbs so that when you lift your foot, it can maintain speed for two miles. :)

I have a 2011 Golf TDI, and it gets comparable mileage. It is a pleasant surprise that a far larger (but not that much heavier IIRC) car does as well.

Real world 45 miles per US gallon highway driving, under non hypermiling but flow with the traffic speed is VERY good for such a large car running on 235 shoes. VW definitely has a winner in the Passat TDI. I'd like to see VW throws in a 7th gear on all their manual TDI, it is badly needed.

you think doing 1600-1700rpms at 70mph would be better for the engine? I'm guessing VW picked the gearing to match a 65-70mph speed with optimum boost, EGR, and DPF emissions stuffs. If you go any much lower in engine speed I'd say they'd each take a hit in efficiency

From what I've seen of the gear ratios, it looks to be more of a 5 speed anyway. Aren't 4 and 5 almost numerically equal?

5th and 6th *should* use a different final drive ratio than 1st thru 4th, similar to the 2010's. Correct me if I'm wrong.

on my 2010, going from 4th to 5th only drop 200-250 RPMs at 45-50, so many time I find myself going from 4th to 6th when merging on the highway.

Such a small rpm drop...I guess I would also go from 4 to 6.
I wonder if the DSG also does that since 4 and 5 are very close.

Quick note on my fuel top-off today.......460 total miles driven - MFD read 46.7mpg - hand calculated = 47.1mpg. Mixed driving conditions, dang good results from the Passat, figure approx 15% better fuel economy than my 2011 Golf TDI DSG under like conditions. MFD on Passat is pretty good, reading a little short of actual mpg.

Only caveat here is that the tank was not completely full from dealer(tad short of full line), I had trouble getting it completely full as well(took 5 or 6 tries with nozzle releasing from backflow)still not completely full now based on fuel gauge, though it appears to be a tad more full than it was from dealer.....I figure my hand-calculated mpg is worst case results as I couldn't get another drop in the tank. My next fill up should be very accurate as I will do the 5 or 6 release trick to get it close to where I am today.

Fuel consumption 1st tank

Just filled up the tank after 1,109 km (689 mls). When filled up, MFD indicated 93 mls to empty. That makes a total of 782 mls/tank.
My fuel consumption was 5.0 L/100km (47.04 mpg)
MFD estimate was right on.
Not bad for a brand new car and the 1st tank.

Got 4.2 L/100km or 56 mpg on hwy
