The manual says use of a non-507 approved oil will cause your engine to self-destruct, catch fire, causing serious injury and possibly death. :D

The PD manual says the same kind of crap about 505.01...;)
VW knows how to scare the owners off, and it works. Some TDIers in the forum believe in the VW spec oil so much that they only use the 505.01 & 504.00/506.00/507.00 spec oil garbage. MB 229.51 spec oil is better.

......... It seems as though many TDI club members are favoring the 505.01 in a 5W-40 weight over the 507.00 offerings....
I am the odd one to use the M1 ESP FM 5W-40 MB229.51 over 505.01/507.00

M1 ESP FM 5W-40 MB229.51 would be the best

As is well known, M1 ESP 5w30 has both VW 229.51 and VW 507.00 certification, and has almost the same viscosity of the M1 Formula M 5w40. Why not just use the best of both worlds? Unless you live in an extremely hot climate, the 5w30 seems to cover all the bases.

The MB 229.51 spec is based on the generic, "ACEA C3-08" spec, which allows these chemical limits:

sulfated ash < 0.8%
sulfur < 0.3%
phosphorus 700-900 ppm

The VW 507.00 spec seems to have even more stringent chemical limits. For example, the Mobil 1/ESP, 5w-30 has an ash level just over 0.6% and phosphorus of ~ 650 ppm. So if you're considering using an MB 229.51 oil in a new TDI, I'd make sure it meets the more stringent chemical limits of VW 507.00.

I see no reason to deviate from VW 507.00 at this point to address a
non-existent issue....

Close but no cigar.

Factory fill was 5W-40 not 5W-30, as stated in the Owner's Manual.

TDIers would only use the M1 ESP FM 5W-40 if it had the 505.01/507.00 specs approval.

I don't know about that

VW507.00 (2004)
Baseline: A3/B4-04
HTHS (cP): ≥ 3.5
SA (%): ≤ 1.5
P (%): Report
S (%): Report

MB229.51
Baseline: C3-04
HTHS (cP): ≥ 3.5
SA (%): ≤ 0.8
P (%): ≤ 0.08
S (%): ≤ 0.20

From M1 PDS: SA= 0.63

From UOA: P = 669 ppm

The Mobil 1/ESP, 5w-30/5w-40 products are very similar. I'm not sure there's much reason to use one over the other...

Thanks TS.

Ok that sums up the meaningfulness of those charts... :(

What a load.. If it is nothing but a display of how great they hope the oil might be, then what is the point. Marketing...?
Lubrizol is in the business of selling additives, as I recall. The company does not care which oil you buy, nor does it have a vested interest in promoting one VW spec over another.

The chart shows more useful and unbiased information than is available anywhere else. I only wish there were comparisons between ACEA and API spec oils.

Since ACEA and API spec oils are tested in different types of engines, ie light duty automotive diesels vs HD truck engines, I'm not sure this comparison would have too much value?
