Old parts from warranty claims

Just a quick question regarding old parts that get replaced from a warranty claim.
I just got my DPI filter replaced from a TDi emission warranty claim. Yea!!! But I was hoping to get the old one back as I know how much they are worth if I bring it to a scrap yard but the dealer is telling that VW requires the core back……does any body know if that’s correct or if this is just the dealer trying to do there own thing ??

Only if you pay for the parts. If so they are required to give you the old ones if you ask before they do the work.

For warranty work they usually need to send them back.

Common in the repair biz (maybe even a law in most states?)

Yes, vw does require the dealer to send back parts.
