Mobil1 Oil Changes $27.00 @ Wal-Mart !!

I searched to see if this was posted before but if it has forgive me.

I have had my last two oil changes done on my 03 Jetta at Wal-Mart of all places, Mobil1 Oil Changes are $27.00 for the Basic ($3 more if you want them to vaccum).

It is not worthwhile to do it myself for that price, Mobil1 15-50 is $6.96 quart on the shelf at Walmart. They do not carry filters for TDI's (like I would use Fram anyway!). You can bring your own and they will credit you back $1.99 for the filter. I get OEM Mann Filters for $5.45 locally. My drain pan and ramps now sit idle...

This price should be good at any Walmart / Super Walmart that has an Auto/ Tire Center.

BTW: I am getting the 15-50 but a freind who works at a VW dealer says I should get 5-40... I drive 1000 miles a week in warm to hot climate... I feel better with the 15-50... whats best?

I wouldn't use Mobil 1 15w-50 simply because it's only API CF. I'd only use an API CH-4 or CI-4 oil in a diesel.

But here's the entire stats. I'll let the oil experts decipher it.

API = SL/CF

ACEA = B3/B4

Gravity, API = 32.5

Specific Gravity = 0.863

Pour Point, °C (°F) = -45 (-49)

Flash Point, ASTM D 92, °C (°F) = 255 (491)

Cold Cranking, cP @ °C = 5,234@-20° (-4F)

Cold Pumping, cP @ °C = 14,050@-25° (-13F)

Kinematic, cSt @ 40°C = 124.7 (256F)

Kinematic, cSt @ 100°C = 17.4 (212F)

Pumpability Limit,°C (°F) = -37° (-35°)

Viscosity Index = 155

No TBN available.

TBN is 12, Visc 100C = 17.4.

After 6500 miles in my Mercedes and 1.5% soot, it was still TBN 12 and Visc 100C = 17.4. Wear numbers comparable to Delvac 1 in MY experience. YMMV.

walmart should also have the rotella t synthetic 5-40 i run in in my pathfinder and do oil changes at walmart also, same price for the rotella t synthetic oil change as the mobil 1 oil change.
ive been using the mobil 1 in my diesel boat engine for 15 years, and its run most of the time at 80-85 percent max rpm. the 15-50 stays in grade a little better. you can pull the valve cover off and its as clean as day 1.

Ziptar TDI,

Rotella Synthetic 5-40w is sold at Wal*Mart too. I see the price vary from $12.88 to $18.88 a gallon. You only need one gallon actually.

Where you live the weather is warm in the mornings unlike in New England. We've has mornings below 0 now for weeks. We've had 37 days of temps below 30 degrees [that is day-time highs ]. Couple weeks back we've had -10 and -20 in the a.m. A 15-50W oil is way too thick on a super cold motor. Yes, there are tests on pour rates at minus 1,000 degrees, I know.
But in colder climates a 15-50w oil is pretty thick stuff in a crank case that's 0-20 degrees.

To give you an example of cold? Last couple weeks I'd shut my hot motor off for 20 minutes and when I came back out it takes 2 minutes for the temperature needle to come off cold. It's like the engine had never been warmed up. I'm all about 5-40W synthectic.

OMG! Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

I figured I wasn't the only one that had found the Walmart deal.

Thanks for the tips on the oil grades and the Rotella-T. It sounds like the Rotella-T 5-40w is the prefered Oil to get at walmart. I have always had a preference for M1 because the engines I have used it in are always so clean.

Is the Rotella T as clean as Mobil1?

Next Time I go into Wally world I will have them do the 5-40w Rotella T, I'll give it a try. Althgough in the height of summer here when it's 90F I just feel better with the 15-50W

Mobil 1 is a synthetic oil for gassers and is not recommended for use in a TDI.

Shell Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic and Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 synthetic are recommended for the TDI.

Do your engine a favor and use 5W-40, like it says in the VW manual. They have designed the engine's part-to-part clearances with that weight of oil in mind, not heavy truck oil.
Thicker does NOT mean it is better oil. Heavier oil will only increase drag within the engine and cause the oil temps to increase.
Ask any lubricant specialist.

I agree, start-up that engine oil has to flow to needed bearings and journals. The Delvac Mobil 1 is also a great oil and designed for the TDi at $20.00 a gallon. It would work great in hot climates such as found in Florida. A true 10,000 mile oil. Rotella Synthetic 5-40w is a great second back-up especially @ 12.88 a gallon.

peace-out

Thanks for all of your input. Ok I get it 5-40 is the way to go. I will get the Rotella T 5-40w on my next Wlamart Oil Change. I have been reading here how good the Delvac Mobil1 is, I will try to convince the Walmart near me to stock it
or I could go back to doing myself like I did on the 98 TDI.

I buy Biodiesel at Ward Oil in Tampa. Next time I am in there I will check if they carry delvac.

Thanks Guys.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Good alternative. The Shell is the next best to Delvac 1. Don't use any different viscosity other than 5w-40, that is very important.

I have read that 5w-30 can be used, however it specifies not for prolonged high speed useage.

It like looking at a person's health when they are 70 years old verses a 25 year old.
The 70 year old will usually be healthier if they had decent moral values, watched their diet, didn't smoke, exercised, rested.

BS

15w-40 will flow freely down to 5F. It'll never get that cold here where I live. I use full synthetic CI-4 Amsoil 15w-40 in both of my diesels with absolutely NO problems at all.

Now, if I lived up North where it actually got cold, I'd use a 10w-40, or 5w-40. But if I lived where it's really cold (high temps stay below freezing for extended periods) I'd use a 5w-30.

I'm certain it will be just fine.

You guys forgot to mention 1 other company that makes oil for our TDI.

Caterpillar 5W40 of course.

Some say that's Delvac 1 in a different bottle, but oil from CAT is gotta be good, if not the best!!!!

Anybody has CAT oil in their engine right now?

CAT oil IS Delvac-1 and is no better than Amsoil.

I use CAT oils in all my vehicles. For the diesel I am using the CAT/Mobil 5W40 synthetic. I'm getting it for $32.87 per gallon in Edmonton. I also use the Finning (Esso) oils in my gassers. OW30 semi synthetic and 10W30.
For me, these oils are the best and most affordable options our there. Especially the 5W40 synth.

I am not running it presently but will switch back to it (or Delvac1) once the winter season ends and I need an oil change.

We purchase the Caterpillar product for a couple of $$ less per gallon than Mobil Delvac1.

Looks to me like Delvac 1 in the SAME bottle!
Different label, maybe... but same bottle!

For those in southerm MD -- I'm getting Delvac 1 at Chesapeake Petroleum in Upper Marlboro for $94/case (4 gal)... not bad!
