2003 Jetta, 5-speed. Replaced clutch/flywheel after release bearing failed.

Runs well. Runs OK at steady speed. BUT ask for acceleration and it lurches like a teenager learning to drive a manual trans. Ease off the throttle—smooth operation.

No CEL; other than that lurching, things seem ok.

Only clue—was driving up a steep hill at about 20-25 mph in second gear and thought I'd see if it would cruise. It had not lurched before. (I've driven it less than five miles since the clutch job.)

Ideas? Opinions?

Thanks!

Did you connect the dog bone/lower engine mount?

Did you do any other maintenance?

What exactly is it doing, is it low on power...I'd assume it is

Have you cleaned the injection pump?

Is this a stock car or is it tuned?

It's a stock car. Replaced motor, which had 214 k on it and was very tired, with a low-mileage (20 k, according to the instrument cluster) motor from a wrecked car.

Changed timing belt, tensioner, all rollers, water pump, thermostat, CTS, flywheel, pressure plate, and release bearing. Did not touch the injection pump.

Does seem low on power—but my reference is an AHU in a 98 Jetta, which is ~ 500 pounds lighter than the 2003.

Do you have vcds?

Was all of this maintenance done when you did the clutch?

Yes, all maintenance was done when I replaced the clutch/flywheel. Fuel and air filters were replaced too. Have driven it only five miles—three short test drives.

Yes, I have VCDS.

Did not notice slowdown shudder.

Where is your timing set at? What's your IQ set at?

Static timing—dead center, precisely as the Bentley describes
Dynamic timing—centered between the upper/lower limits in the graph

Haven't checked the IQ (mine is low just now…)

This motor (and injection pump / injectors) have 20k miles since 99-03? That's a long time to sit. Please check the IQ and injector balance. Can you get a good road log?

Went under the car to check condition of the dogbone mount, which is in good shape and bolted solidly.

Noticed that the turbo outlet hose was almost off the duct to the IC. Reseated it and tightened things—that may have been the problem. But will still check the IQ as soon as time permits.
