I was on a freeway with the cruise on and caught up to a slower vehicle so pulled into the left lane and went to accelerate to pass and the engine lost power. It would not rev up. I pulled to the shoulder and stopped and turned the engine off. It started up and performed as normal for the rest of the trip. Can't fiqure out what happened. I suspect that it had something to do with the cruise control as I left it on when I tried to accelerate. The vehicle is a 2000 jetta tdi which I bought new. Any ideas?????

Maybe a turbo boost tube came apart. Could be your n75 valve is fouled
YOur intake may be blocked. Check out the "frequently asked questions"

Search "overboost" or "limp mode".
Number of possibilities. N75 is common failure along with older vacuum lines. Going up the difficulty line you could have a siezed actuator or sooted up turbo that needs to be cleaned.
WARNING - If you take it to the dealer they will tell you you need a new turbo. Find a trusted tdi guru to fix.
Ensure that you really drive this thing frequently to keep everything working well.
Tons of information on this forum on this issue. Don't panic until it happens frequently. Then methodically figure out the problem. A vagcom is a real benefit to resolving.
Tip: You don't have to stop to reset the limp mode, simply put in the clutch and cycle the ignition on and off and away you go.

Well, I have to clarify that when I said it lost power I thought the engine had stalled but my wife said she thought it just went down to idle. I was a little too busy trying to get to the side to really notice and then I turned off the ignition. This vehicle has already had the intake replaced under warranty when it fouled up and the turbo was replaced under my extended warranty not that long ago when it was acting up intermittently. This latest occurrence is completely different than the normal loss of power that you experience with a fouled intake or loss of boost or maf. It felt to me like it had stalled, but it probably had dropped to an idle and would not rev up. I recall that relay 109 was a problem with these first A4's so will do a search of that to see if it matches up with those. I still have warranty but it never tripped any cel so I doubt the dealer could diagnose it and I couldn't get it to do it again as I thought maybe I had hit the brake and the accelerator at the same time when I moved by big foot to the accelerator.

Thanks for the input.

From a very similar personal experience this past summer, I would bet on a $10 (tdiparts.com), 109 relay.
