I have a 2003 TDI. When I use the key fob, the left rear door won't lock. The button tries to move but no go. I can push the button down and it locks and pull the inside handle and it unlocks. The security system senses when the door is locked or not and I can hear the actuator trying when I use the key fob, so I think the wiring through the door is ok. Do I need to replace the complete actuator assembly? It's a drag to have to reach in to unlock the door.

A few ways to go on this. Some suggest replacing the microswitch (see linked thread, requires light soldering) and some recommend just replace the whole module.

The OP says the system knows when the door is locked, so not a microswitch issue.

The symptoms are consistent with stripped gears in the lock actuator, which requires replacing the whole module.
