Hello all,
Back when I had an ALH on my car and I was having some issues with my VNT17 turbo, I called up Peter at TDI Parts (now ID Parts) looking for a deal on a 17/22 turbo. I asked if there were any weird returns sitting around, and it turned out that there definitely was one.
This 17/22 had been installed by jasontdi (Wisconsin TDI guru) on a customer's car, but the customer complained about a strange "odd whistle" to the turbo. Jason removed it from the car and sent it back to Peter for the issue. Peter sent Jason a new turbo and sent the problematic 17/22 out to the Garrett service center that built the turbo. They went through it and rebalanced it, but were never able to find any issues.
Peter sold me this turbo at a discount and I installed it on my ALH. Sure enough, I quickly discovered that exact same noise the original buyer had discovered. It is was only under high boost, but never presented any issues in 15k miles.
It is my belief there is a flaw in the casting of the exhaust manifold causing the noise. This is the only explanation that makes sense to me given the fact that nobody (not even the manufacturer) can find a fault in the turbo and that it never presented any driving issues or failures.
Now that I have a GT2260V, I have no use for this 17/22 and it has just been taking up storage space. I am looking to get $900 + shipping for the turbo. I feel that this is a fair price given the use and the new price of these turbos. Please PM me with any questions.
