Buckinjacket brought his car over today for some TLC.
It had DTC 18256 G28 bad no signal in the engine module.
18256 in the AutoTrans module - check DTC Memory of Engine controller
01314 in ABS Brakes, Central Electrics, Instruments, Steering Assist "Engine control module check DTC memory"

A new cam and lifters had just been installed. The owner had bought an extended warranty and was having to use shops that would deal with the company.
He drove the car up to the shop, it was driveable; it just had the typical worn out cam "bup, bup" from the injector lobes opening intake valves during the power stroke.

A week later it was delivered to his house on a roll-back with the above codes, running so poorly that it could hardly move in the drive. 10 seconds to crank. Not driveable at all.

The shop wanted to replace the ECU (it had already been replaced 18K ago, by them???), and they said he needed a new crank sensor.

The owner did his homework and new that they had pulled the oil pressure sender to test the oil pressure - required by the insurance - and that the G28 crank sensor wiring came off just by that. They broke the latch on the oil pressure electrical connector.

The car could hardly get off the dolly in my yard, constantly having to be restarted. When we pulled the charge air pipe we could hear exhaust and see smoke puff out periodically.

We checked the cam to crank timing, it was slightly off (maybe 5 degrees) - about half a cam lock pin width - plenty of mark and pray paint everywhere - but enough room was left in the cam slots to adjust it, which we did.

Still ran poorly, still had smoke puffing out and exhaust sounds from the intake.

Inspected cam and rocker arms. Nothing noticeable here.

Checked compression 525, 520, 520 520.

Pulled oil filter housing and removed wire connector from crank sensor. Found #2 wire broken. This wire normally has 5v on it from the ECU, we are not sure if it was shorting to ground or just open circuited. Up to the loft for repair wires from old engine harnesses, repaired with good heat shrink butt splice and an additional heat shrink overlay.

Since we still had not found a source for the smoke and exhaust out of the intake, we figured a bad EGR, leaking through, and put in troubleshooting block off plate (.042" steel plate.)

Put the timing covers, harmonic balancer, wheel well cover, tire, serpentine belt etc on, cranked it up and it ran very well. All codes cleared in all modules. No smoke or exhaust sound from the intake. Good power on test drive.

We did note that his alternator pulley was locked up, no sprag clutch feature left. He'll order parts and we'll probably put them in at the June 8th GTG in Winnsboro, SC.

He also needs to have the turbo vane set screw dialed in a turn or a turn and a half.

But he left relieved and happy.
