Engine code letters??

I did a forum search and came up empty handed.

Does anyone know the which engine codes go with which TDI motors.

Specifically I want to know what the older TDI engine in the B4/A3 Jetta and '98 Beetle was and what the newer motor with the variable vane turbo is.

One is AHU and one is ALH I believe but WHICH is WHICH. Searched the Internet too and I was unable to come up with a conclusive answer. I think we should add details about the engine names to our FAQ too.

So can anyone help?

Well, I don't know about older cars, but my 2k2 is an "ALH". You can find what yours is on a tag under the trunk mat. I believe this designation applies to all A4 vehicles, but I'm no expert. You'll have to wait for Drivebiwire to chime in on this one for something conclusive!

And as a corollary, is there a guide out in the ether to the option codes in my trunk? They are all three character alphanumeric codes if I recall correctly.
