Driving home last night in my 04 PD, cruise control at 70mph. Just clicked over 222,000 miles and all the sudden I was decelerating and there no engine power. Lights, etc all remain on but slowing down and losing road noise I realize the engine is off. Able to get off an exit safely. Pull they keys out and back in and try to restart, the engine turns over but does not fire.

I let it sit for a minute, turn the key back on, don't see the glow plug light and don't hear the fuel pump prime (it's almost 2 years old, w/ 100k miles). Try a few more times, nothing.

Do a quick search and symptoms point to maybe relay 109. Had the car towed home and here we are today. I woke up and immediately found a replacement 109 relay from a local Euro auto shop. Once it warmed up I went outside and noticed to mess with the car again - the glow plug light is working now with the original realy. Forgot the light won't turn on when the engine is stilll hot- duh. Replaced relay 109 anyways with the new one.

Still nothing, cranking but no start. Glow plug light goes on , but I do not hear the fuel pump prime. When I turn the key off I don't hear the normal 5 clicks of the ASV do anything either.

Pulled out the VCDS and did a scan - throwing this code: 01314

Ok, ECU connection maybe? I pulled the cover, disconnected the ECU wire harness - no signs of corrosion or anything else wrong. Plugged it back in, cleared the codes and ran another scan. No faults found now, but still same issue with not starting.

Where should I be looking next? Maybe test the voltage to the fuel pump and make sure it's still working? The other thing that concerns me is I don't hear the 5 clicks from the asv when I pull the key.

At a loss welcoming advice :(

When I turn the key on, I'm getting 12V for about a second on the plug that connects to the lift pump unit (measuring the outer two pins, + square end, - rounded). This is good.

I have a loose battery, 12v, I brought back to the pump and connected the outer pins on the lift pump itself to and there is no noise or anything. I disconnected the fuel line from the filter and it was bone dry. I think my pump is dead. Just looked at my logs, it only has 70k miles on it ...this was a lift pump sourced from Defender Tech which if I remember correctly I read that if it dies, it doesn't work like the original unit and will not allow the injection pump to suck fuel up as a bypass.

Does this sound correct? Injection pump must be bone dry and not getting fuel = no start.

Doesn't explain the fault codes above, but maybe that's unrelated.

It does sound correct. Put in a new pump, then check your flow out of the filter. There are specs on this site. Then check pressure at the tandem pump to be sure that your tandem pump isn't dead from lack of fuel.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me, I need to check my injector balance to see if the dead lift pump led to a weak tandem pump which led to a dead injector. My PD just isn't running right.

Thanks! I think the fault code came from me turning things on with the old relay 109 out just to test the glow plug light. The code didn't come back once I cleared it.

What are the chances the tandem pump is toast due to running dry? And for testing the tandem pump pressure, what procedure would I use? Once the system is primed, would I put the fuel intake line (coming off the flow out of the filter) into a container of diesel and then the return line (back to filter) into another container and see how much flows out? Similar to a pure diesel purge operation but different containers to monitor flow/pressure? I remember a good bit flows when I've done DP in the past. And obviously need to unplug the lift pump or join the lines there to prevent a mess.
