I drive my gas tach with a converter similar to the Dakota unit on eBay for about half the price and it's smaller and works great

Half of $20 on eBay? That sounds like a really good deal if it works. It was determined that a tach from an 84 85 vanagon would work with the ECU signal with no mods. I was able to purchase an earlier year tach used. The tach is not as accurate as the scan gauge or my vag com, but is better than a dead needle. My vanagon is an 82 Diesel. The speedometer did not support the VSS, so I originally purchase a used cluster from an 86 to get the speedo head. My printed circuit foil was also shot. The replacement cluster came with the tach, so that got me trying to get it working. I'd ask for more information on this half price unit on ebay. $10 seems cheap to get a tach working. Regards.
