Castrol Edge 0w40 is now available in the US. Appears to be at Advance Auto and Sam's Club, but others may have it or be able to get it.

So far, I have not nailed down which PDS is for our flavor.

Bob, is this an oil meeting OE specs for cars we're concerned about?

My sister may like this in her Tiguan 2.0T where she seems to get some hard starts at -30C and below. This winter wasn't so bad, but never know what may be in store for next winter. There's nothing much owners with 2004 or later TDIs can do with this oil.

Mobil 1 0w40 is another option, and can usually be had for cheaper.

Who knows how well 229.5 oils hold up in PDs, it's not as commonly used as CI-4+ and CJ-4 oils.

Yes, I told her about the Mobil1 0W40 option. This is just another for her list, not that she really cares to try different oils.

Bob, do you have more detailed tech. info on the 0W-30? There are different ones out there and I'm very happy to hear this one meets ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 and the requisite VW specs for non-PD/CR TDIs.

100C Visco - 12.2 cSt
40C Visco - 72.0 cSt
VI: 167
HTHS: 3.5 cP (not on data sheet, confirmed by Castrol, in the Castrol EDGe Q&A on BITOG)

I have some light reading here about it from BITOG :)

FWIW the above 0w30 is the fabled "GC", German Castrol, aka Syntec 0w30 Euro Formula.

Why does the data sheet only give HTHS as 2.9? "Somebody said X," even if that somebody was from Castrol, carries in my mind somewhat less weight than a written statement from Castrol, and as much as I respect BITOG, ditto for something found on an FAQ there. Why don't Castrol just fix the damn spec sheet?

It says 2.9 minimum, which is correct the SAE grade. [look at the other grades, too]

The Castrol EDGE Q&A is information FROM Castrol.

BITOG said:
What is the actual HTHS viscosity of Edge with SPT 0w-30?
Castrol said:
Castrol EDGE with SYNTEC Power Technology 0W-30 meets the industry specification for a 30 weight oil, which is 2.9 minimum.

Castrol EDGE SPT 0W-30 is engineered to meet European specifications which require a higher minimum HTHS viscosity. The HTHS viscosity of this product is 3.5 cp
The specs it does meet requires a minimum 3.5 cP HTHS. This oil used to be 3.6 cP a few years ago.

Don't leave it in too long, Bob! By Castrol's own label, it is rated for CF service, not including the -4 which is needed for extended oil drain intervals.

OK, so I don't like and don't trust Castrol. Sue me.
Oh, and here you go: :D
I'm just wondering what API truck specs have to do with a Euro light duty oil? :)

The above oil is MB 229.5 and MB LL01. Has good SAPS (1.12%) and TBN (10.2). 10K miles easily. Rated for 20K miles / 2 years in Europe.

Should go 12k in a TDI....
Very easily. This is a fixed interval oil, 20K miles / 2 years in Europe. I'd say 15K miles here in the US.

I know this UOA is from Mobil 1 0w40, but... 9900 miles, TBN is still at 6.4. I don't know how many engine hours this was though.

Bob,

Shouldn't mileage on that last 0w-40 test be 9700 miles? How can we trust any of their data....Hmm

They rely on that information being provided by the customer. I could have rounded off a few hundred miles.

Bob, my car has had Schaeffers 9000 5w-40 in it for previous 100K+ miles and last 3 owners. I am having a little trouble sourcing more of it locally. With winter coming up and cold temps in Iowa, would this Castrol 0w-40 be a good candidate to switch too.

Previous owner of my car was a diesel mechanic and he told me switching oil on engine like mine approaching 300,000 miles is hard on it. Any truth to that?

No issues changing oils. FWIW I bought my S9000 online from a place in ID, Aligator Performance.

This [Castrol Edge 0w40] would be a good oil to use year-round, along with the usual Mobil 1 0w40, Rotella T6 5w40, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40, Valvoline SynPower MST 5w40, Castrol Syntec/Edge 5w40, and Castrol Syntec/Edge 0w30.

Both are available locally to me. :) 0W30 goes in 2 weeks time.
Very nice. :)

I can't decide between GC 0w30, ESP 5w30 or RL 0w40 for my next change. [or the new 5w30 CJ-4 oils, or an older 5w30 CI-4+ oil]

I can't give enough praise for the RL 0W40 (albeit, however, without having done any OA). Amazon.com sells them for ~$12/qt; as you may recall, I got a decent deal from a member who was offloading his.
