Bad Serpentine Belt - What caused this?

I noticed this on the smooth side of my serpentine belt.

I checked for any obstructions that would cause this groove but I couldn't find anything. I replaced the belt and and ran the engine for 5 minutes and then went on a 30 minute test drive. The new belt looked fine.

Is this normal wear and tear or damage due to contact with a foreign object.

The car is a 2000 Golf and the belt had about 72,000 miles on it.

I think you just had a bad belt. Looks like a delaminated tire. Glad you caught it though.
