This is a month by month competition. Every time you make an entry it will be added up and recorded together according to the fuel type and car/year you are driving.
THIS IS NOT an individual tank competition (or a partial tank competition for that matter).

Entries will be accepted until September 5, but remember, report tanks FILLED IN August.

Entry Format:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Driver:
Miles:
Gallons:
Model Year:
Model:
Tranny:
Fuel Type:

You are allowed to put more than one fill up in a post, so long as each fill up conforms to format.

MPG: (optional since I will calculate it automatically anyway)
(anything else you would like to add)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hint on entering your data - after the colon ( ":") put a space.

US GALLONS AND MILES

TRANNY TYPES:
(x) A = x speed automatic
(x) M = x speed manual *
DSG = direct-shift gearbox
CVT = continuously variable transmission
* if you have swapped in a taller 5th gear please noted this (ie: 5M w/.681)

FUEL TYPES:
Bx = biodiesel - x is the percentage of bio
Biodiesel use equal to, or more than B20, will be indicated in GREEN.
ULSD / LSD / D2 = normal petroleum based diesel
Also please note if it's winterized

- please note if you are using a fuel additive (ie: ULSD +PS)
- - Power Service (PS); Stanadyne (ST); Redline (RL)

Posts not in format will not be tallied / corrected.

Please do not go back and add additional fillups to a post. Multiple fillups per post is fine as long as all fillups are in format. If the driver name is not the same as your post name - this will be considered "Not in format" and will not be counted. Only exceptions would be "and spouse" etc.

I experimented with three trips to work (120 mi r/t) with no A/C and cruising at 55 mph. I beat my average (usually at 65 mph w/ A/C) by 13 mpg.

44.3MPG :-( I'm not sure why this tank was so bad. I blew out the turbo out a number of times more than normal. My wife got 50.5MPG in her Prius, and boy did she rub it in. I did change the oil, fuel filter etc. But I did not spill much at all. (Also a little more AC than normal)

53.7 mpg is not out of line for a manual trans PD driven lightly.

I am moving this from the July thread because it wasn't included in the totals. I guess I put it in to late for July.

Model: Jetta
Tranny: 5m
Fuel Type: ULSD + PS

MPG: 56.31

I did it! :) Well over 800 miles on a tank. By far my best (not anymore, see below). No A/C, average speed of 55 mph, windows up as much as possible, and trying not to us my brakes to stop when possible.

Tank 2

Driver: meby
Miles:749.1
Gallons: 13.2
Model Year: 2000
Model: Jetta
Tranny: 5m
Fuel Type: ULSD + PS

Mpg: 56.75 :)

This tank I put grandma to shame.:D Except for the last 125 which was done on the interstate with the cruise @ 70 mph. No a/c.

Tank 3

Driver: meby
Miles: 725.5
Gallons: 14.13
Model Year: 2000
Model: Jetta
Tranny: 5m
Fuel Type: ULSD

MPG: 51.34

This tank was all but 160 miles on the interstate. Cruise @ 75 or 80 mph. A/C on most of the time. What wasn't on the interstate was driven like a madman. No PS this time. I went to WI over the weekend and wow, you fuel is a lot cheaper. Filled one tank @ $4.21 and the other @ $4.28 per gallon.

56 mpg, not even trying hard. Just a rural, non-interstate commute, not even in flat-country. The Shenandoah Valley is a pretty place to log miles. I'll admit to driving a bit slower on the uphills, but when September hit's I'm going for 900 miles on a tank. (no A/C)

Does the '98 Jetta have a low fuel bell that rings when you get below the red?

My first tank of August, and my second 1000 mile tank overall:

Driver: MikeMars
Miles: 1009.0 miles
Gallons: 16.091 (60.91 litres = 13.398 imp gallons)
Model Year: 2000 (early)
Model: Passat 1.9TDi 115hp PD
Tranny: 5M
Fuel Type: ULSD

Trip computer claims 74.0 imperial mpg, but calculating by hand says 75.3 (I presume this may be due to foam). Reserve light came on at 938.1 miles which is a record for me. I continued experimenting with engine-off P&G where I could (i.e., not in heavy traffic, bad weather, darkness, etc). 'Don't try this technique at home'. At the mid-point of the tank, the indicated mpg was 77mpg, which hints that a 1,100 mile tank might be possible if (and only if) the conditions are perfect.

Weather was good for the majority of the tank but the last few days were wet + windy. Temp dropped from 22c to 14c by the end.

Well put a fork in me, I am done with great mileage numbers, for the last 24 months I was somewhere in the top 10 each month, actually at the top once.

We moved 10 miles closer to town (suburbs) which means almost all our driving is in town. To top that off my wife has been taking the TDI to work to avoid using the van for mileage reasons, which is probably hurting the mileage more than driving in town ;) But I shouldn’t really complain, almost 54 is not bad compared to 22 in the van…
