Doing a drain and fill of my gearbox fluid to send off a UOA sample (want to see if there's any wear with the SMF gear clatter) and noticed when looking at the erWin fluid capacities tables that the 02Q in the Passat calls for different fluid than the 02Q in the Golf/GSW.

G052171A2 1L $27.00 Passat
G052512A2 1L $13.50 Golf/GSW

Any idea what the differences are in these two fluids and what might justify the use of one over the other? I currently have G052512A2 in mine with about 13k miles of use, but there is still some residual Redline shockproof that I used initially in there as the color was still quite blue when I checked it.

Back in the B4 generation the Passat had a Longitudinal engine/transaxle and the Golf is Transverse.
The Ring and Pinion gear types are different on them and require different lubricant types.
Since Transaxle oil is used for both the transmission and the diff, they spec each one accordingly.

I believe the NMS Passats are transverse as well compared to the older B5s. Thinking there is another reason here??

Maybe it's a thicker viscosity due to the extra weight of the Passat?
