I'm finally wanting to do the 5th gear swap and now that I'm looking, I can't seem to find one.

Anyone know where I can obtain one?

the darkside one comes out to $366 USD roughly, get it from them.. its not worth $500 imho, that kind of money gets you a weddle race gear.

Darkside doesn't have them anymore. Looks as though they're becoming as rare as a 3-legged dog.

Wow, that's crazy. I'm glad I was able to get mine a while back, at a good price too.

Boraparts has the .658 and .717 gears in stock. They might be a goood alternative for you. If I did much freeway travel at 70 plus, I'd go 658, if not, the 717 is a nice 200 rpm drop.

Is the .658 going to be unavailable soon too?
I wouldn't recommend the .658 without some kind of power upgrade, or else you'll be going into 4th way too often for an uphill battle, or a passup.

If there are hints of the .658 going out of production, then I'll buy a set and sell my .681.

.681 are ideal, but now with more power, I would like 200rpm even lower.... although there is additional stress on the transmission the lower you go.

.681 keeps rpm about the same as being in 6th gear in the 6 speed transmission swap, and the rpm drop from 4th to 5th isn't bad or exaggerated..

Actually to have the equivalent fifth gear in an 02J as compared to the 6th gear in an 02M diesel geared six speed, you would need a 0.626 to be the same which gives you a final ratio of 2.129. A 0.681 gives you a final ratio of 2.308. A 0.658 give the ratio of 2.23. A 0.622 gives the final ratio of 2.108. They did make a 0.622 but not sure it is still available. The fifth gear in the 02m has a final ratio of 2.55 and in the 02j it is 2.56 or virtually identical.

I'm going to trust you on this one. I had calculated the speeds in highest gear for my car using each transmission's ratios a while back and came to that conclusion (although seemingly wrong). Maybe I had calculated with Ring and Pinion gear 1; thank you for the correction, very useful info.
