My 06 just passed 5k miles, also having passed every other vehicle on the highway during the 2+ months since it was new! It has been an absolute delight to drive (mostly highway, no off-road or towing yet). The range is slightly less than the 04 Passat (500-ish instead of 550+ miles), but the fill-up is 26 gallons instead of 16! My mileage has consistently been 20 +/- 1 (usually -)-- calculated by me not the computer which always seems to exaggerate.

The only annoyance was being told by the dealer, 30 minutes into my wait for the oil change on Tuesday, that they would have to reschedule the appointment because they don't stock the oil filter for this model! Out of two 06 TDIs they got, the other one is still on the lot! Oh, and that oil changes cost between $150 and $200 because it takes 10 quarts of 505.01 oil!

Hope the next few hundred k miles are as fun!

WOW, you should see what the oil change would cost if they were using the correct oil!!

If you pay a dealer that much then they deserve it. You need to read your manual look under the hood and call VW - we have data that shows there is only one oil for the gear driven cam of your VW.

NHV10, repeat after me: 506.01, 506.01, 506.01...

Since you had to reschedule, have them order and put in the correct oil or get your own from TDIParts and have them put it in for you....

Even if he changes himself - 165 USD per 10k.

They have a six cylinder that is what 27 mpg and uses 6 litre of oil. I bet that six has plenty of power. That 10 cylinder is for extreme use - and who buys a unit like tha and beats it tha hard up the side of a mountain.

You got a very nice SUV -

Thanks for the correction. I'll check on the oil number-- have only added 1.5 quarts in the 5k miles, and got it from the dealer for this car...

Yes updates clearly say 507 - but do not expect 505.01 will do damge cause it won't - you are OK.

Thanks for the reassuring words... I can only imagine how expensive engine work would be on the Touareg.

The old rule of thumb was "replace your oil every 3K miles to avoid expensive engine damage." If they keep improving the oil (and raising the price) we will start replacing the engine every 3K miles to avoid expensive oil damage...

More seriously, I wonder if the service department at shadier stealerships will be able to resist the temptation to pull a fast switch and use normal oil instead of the 507.00 when doing a service...

My dealer actually claimed they had the 507.00 oil and used that part number on the invoice. I had a discussion with them about 505.01 and 507.00 and they actually seemed to understand. (They don't have 506.01.) Whether or not they pull a fast one is hard to know, you can't go back in their shop and wait around all day for the tech to fetch the oil. The first two oil changes on the Touareg are at 5k and 10k, then the interval jumps, the third is at 20k, so not much to worry about at first even if they used the 505.01.

I have just over 15,000 miles on my '07 V10. The dealer has done all the service to this point. I mistakenly scheduled an oil change last Friday at the 15,000 mile mark. I guess it can't hurt to change the oil early but it did cost me just over $100. My service ticket said they used 12 Quarts and used Castrol brand oil. They assured me it was the correct oil and what they have used on my previous services at 5k and 10k. Does this make sense?

They should have put the part no. for the oil on your ticket. You can compare to post 10 to see if it was 507.00. In some of the other oil threads the part no. for the 505.01 is listed. For 5k changes either one should be OK, when you go to the longer intervals I would definitely insist on the 507. They might have to order it and it costs more, I suspect based on what you paid that they used 505.01 oil.

I bought my 06 in February and got the impression that the 07s weren't available yet (but got $20K off including the 3K owner loyalty so wouldn't have waited anyway). Have you driven a pre-07 V10 and do you notice any big changes in the 07?

Do you think we both will be sorry when the new V6 TDI Touareg shows up in 08?

I saw the fuel economy numbers somewhere for the European V6 and V10 TDI models, the V6 was better but not as big a difference as I was expecting. It's probably due to the weight and full time 4WD, the Touareg is never going to be a high mpg vehicle. I agree, love that torque.
