After multiple PMs about my experiences with my 335d, I decided to do a post to answer some of the common questions:

For me, the 335d represented the holy grail of diesels. I’d worked my way up from an 86 Jetta TD (which consumed more oil than diesel), to a 98 TDI, then a 2000, a 2002, then a highly modified 2004. Once I was ready to sell the modded 04, I took a long look at the 335d before buying one. I read about the issues, spoke to the dealers, and tried to get an idea about what I was getting myself into

Last July, I picked up my white 335d with 74k on it from a local dealer. It had been a trade-in and had sat on their lot for months. They accepted my lowish ball offer, and a couple days later, I left with it.

These are experiences with the car.

Pros:

Power. Torque. Silly acceleration. Anyone who has only driven tdi’s will not know what’s hit them. 265hp / 425tq – it pulled like a freight train

Handling – Brilliant heavy steering. Canyon roads were no match for this car

Driving Comfort (with non-runflats) – once I got rid of the runflat garbage, the car was great in the city too. I didn’t feel every crack in the road anymore

Braking – The car gets moving easily, and stops just as easily

Styling – So much better looking that the VWs right now

Fuel Economy – I averaged 7.2l/100 over 35k (about 31 mpg over 20k miles)

Cons:

Comfort – Those seats have got to be the worst pieces of junk I’ve ever sat in. The seats in my current 04 Wagon are better. To be fair, I have a weak back, so I’m very sensitive to seats, and my seats were non-sport pack, but still. The car was 55k new!

Transmission – at low speed, I could not get it to shift smoothly. At WOT, it was buttery smooth but in the city, it would constantly shift a bit late and be generally a bit confused. I had the dealer do a software update, but that didn’t improve it. As per the forums, a flush was recommended, but the dealer refused as it is a ‘life time fill’. Now, let it be said – I’m a standard transmission purist. There is also a 2010 JSW with a DSG in the family, so maybe I’m spoiled….

Practicality – Guys – it’s really not all that big inside. The back seat is a joke, and the trunk isn’t all that spacious.

Lack of specialists – With the VWs, if there’s something that we don’t want to touch, there are guys in most areas who will take on the job. With the BMW’s, the number of garages outside the dealer who know the cars are very few. I spoke to a couple shops about a tranny flush and they weren’t interested in touching it.

Mods:

JBD – a tuning box came with the car. Did it make it faster? Sure, but you only felt the difference at highly illegal speeds.

Retrofit Center Speaker – I set out to improve the sound, so I retrofitted a center speaker with the help of the a post on e90post.com

JBL MS-8 – This is a really neat bit of tech – it’s a DSP (digital sound processor) with a small amp built in. A guy in Florida made a plug and play harness, so I was about to install it in the place of the stock amp easily. It really woke up the stock speakers.

BMW iPod kit – not a mod as such, and very expensive, but a must if you spend lots of time on the road

Ditching the runflats – The dealer scoffed at me, but it improved the car tremendously. I went from 17s with runflats to 18s with General GMax AS03’s – much more complaint ride along with better grip. I also bought a spare tire donut for the trunk form a vendor in the USA to cover me if I had a flat.

Conclusion:

I was sold as soon as I drove it for the 1st time and felt that wave of torque. Unfortunately, a host of little things made me fall out of love with that car.

In the end, I’ve traded it in on a 2015 GTI. I did badly in that transaction – no one up here wanted a 2009 335d, not even the wholesalers, but with a couple discounts on the GTI, I was able to get out relatively unscathed.

I'd love a Bimmer too, I fantasize of a 328d xDrive Touring. I know all of the cons and I have to expect that in the rarefied air of BMW ownership you'll have few options for half-competent people to work on it. You'll be paying the 100-odd-dollars-per-hour for labour and you'll have no recourse to complain because - hey, you wanted a Bimmer. Wanna play, gotta pay. BMW is not nicknamed Bought My Wife for no reason. :D

The cost of repairs and labor wasn't a big deal (to me anyways) - quite a bit is still DIY. It's just frustrating the BMW got it so right on some things, and so very wrong on others.

i've actually been looking and dreaming of a 335D. very strange that they don't seem to have XM built in.. when almost every car seems to have them from factory!

what DIY were you able to do? is the oil filter accessible from the top and can be extracted with a pela? it's handy to be able to do oil changes quickly and neatly that way...

i heard the 2011 and previous bmw's are not as complex and can still be maintained outside of dealership. but still not many bmw techs? that's surprising.

Oil change was easy. It's a 36mm bolt on the housing, 8l or so of LL04 spec oil (I got mine from crappy tire, M1 ESP). I also changed a tie rod end on it - very simple.

I had trouble finding guys who knew anything about the diesel engine. The chassis stuff was easy (but I never had any issues)

Bump pretty sure I will be joining this club.. Sad to say goodbye to vw but the stats on the 335d are just too hard for me to ignore... The amount of money I have spent modding my current tdi and it still wont even touch one of these cars.
Anyone know were I can find the maintenance schedule?
I didnt see it in the owners manual of the model I was test driving.

Bought a 2009 335d last tuesday... Took under a week to sell my beloved Glitdi.. I love that car..but man was it painful waiting when I had the d sitting in my driveway while commuted for the week in the jetta. Got a pretty good deal on the D private sale, and sold my car for what I would say was a good price, full asking price...Young guy... hw is going to love it.
In full Bmw form I have a check engine light that just appeared a day ago.. Time to buy a Scan tool...If only vcds would work on all German cars.

To be fair, you also picked up a used car that may have had issues in the past. Did you get a full service history print-out from BMW to verify that?

I can turn the greatest car into junk in a week by abusing it.

I'm betting it's emissions related.

Actually, yeah I did. Reviewed the history with the BMW dealer. Nothing all that interesting - 1 check engine light, some little trim thing. They even did the last free inspection on the car prior to me buying it. How did it have 'many issues in the past'? I don't understand where you drew that conclusion from - I have no complaint about the reliability of the 335d. It needed 2 Nox sensors when I 1st got it (paid for by the selling dealer) and an adblue pump while I had it (was cracked and leaking)

Pretty sure its a boost leak... Mil come on when I lay into the throttle hard.. under easy driving mil goes away and doesn't come back till I hammer it again. Scan tool is on the way, should be here later this week, we will find out soon enough.

Which scan tool are you getting for the BMW? Saw a beautiful blue 335d with sport package at a driving school for my kid. Eyed that sucker up!

Only situation I had was hitting the accelerator with nothing on the small turbo until I hit 3K RPM and then the car would surge forward. Turned out being the turbo actuators.

P.S. I use BMWhat app.

On my way to pick up our 2010 335d this weekend. One owner, fully loaded (except adaptive cruise & not w M pkg), no accidents, babied, 25k miles. Like our TDI's but just want something quicker, handles well, and STOPS! The brakes on the VW's are decent but don't haul down nearly as quick as a BMW.

Thanks for that review on the 335d. Those of us in the US with TDIs are going to be in a predicament in a few months with the diesel scandal settlement. I have not been able to find any car, save perhaps a Tesla, that equals the performance and economy of the TDI, not even close. I had thought of taking the buy out and going with the 335d, I won't love it like I love my Jetta but it could be a compromise. I have a '16 BMW 428 in the garage and there are things I dislike about it and I like almost everything about the Jetta except for the cheap interior materials. Very disappointed that I'm going to either lose the car or have it sniffled with some power and fuel grabbing mod.

The biggest thing I miss is easier the sound system. The GTI doesn't sound that good, and neither does a 2013 328xi with the high end sound system.

2004 pd tdi sport (limited edition) platinum grey and a 1996 dodge cummins diesel 4x4 5sp lots of mods and a 335d stock for now.
I currently own a 2011 335d msport. Aside from a boost leak and some leaking vacuum lines (all due to it sitting motionless on a dealership's lot for months) the car has been a perfect runner for the 14 months ive owned it. Size wise (interior) its comparable to my 04 jetta tdi so i wasnt rattled by its size. I mean its a sports car. Not an escalade. Besides its smaller interior, when i look at my dee or my jetta or even my giant cummins i see a two seater. Not a taxi.
