I'm in need of new tires, run the stock suspension, stock 16" Bioline alloys, and will go with an all-season tire (I run 90% freeway at 80mph or better, 95+ miles per day commute), but I'd like to go a tad wider.

I'm looking at either 215/55-16, 215/50-16, or possibly 225/50-16 tires - if they'd fit.
The first two are less than 2% difference circumferentially, the 225s are .1% difference.
But has anyone put a 225/50 on the stock rim? If so, any suspension issues?

Yes, I have and they work great. Now I'm looking for even wider. As far as I can tell 235 is the widest that fit, but I think a 245 with spacers might fit. Any ideas, thoughts?

What tires were the 225/50s? Are they on the stock Bioline alloys?
Do you have any pics you could post (or email)?
I'd really like to see how much "bulge" a 225 would have on the 6.5" wide rim.
Thanks!!

Both Bridgestone Potenza RE050A and Kuhmo Ecsta V710. Yes, on the biolines and steel rims. The BS looks fine on the Biolines, no bulge. Now the 710's on steel rims does show some bulge. The BS are my summer street tires. The 710's are my summer non-street tire. Sorry no pics, Snow tires are on the car right now and the tires are in storage. When I go back I'll take some pics, just don't when. When I first put on the snow tires, I forgot that I was using snow tires and almost spun out on my favorite curve. Lady Luck was generous and no other cars were on the road at the time. 195/65-15 are good for cutting thru snow but they don't handle curves very fast, but they are not supposed to handle fast.

I was wondering the same thing. Tire Rack has specs for all tires. Here are some values.

My stock 205/55-16 Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 UTQG 300AA/91H vs. 225/50-VR16 Continental ContiProContact UTQG 400AA/92V

205/55's are first value

Weight: 20 lbs vs 21lbs
Diam: 24.9'' vs. 24.9''
Width: 8.4" vs 9.2"
Revs/mile: 837 vs 839

As you can see unsprung weight is negligible. The specs for the 205/55-16 were made on 6.5" wide rims, the 225/50-16's on 7" rims.

The rim range for the 225/50's is 6-8".

I sure would like to see a pic of the 225/50's mounted on the stock VW 16" wheels.

Does anyone know if the stock 16 inchers are 6.5" wide rims??

sorry if this might be a late post, but I have ran 245/45/zr16's and 225/50/16's on stock wheels. the 245's were a lil wide for the wheel but had zero problems with anything and they had a good wear pattern. I went to the 225's due to the wheel width but am having problems keeping traction with the slightly narrower footprint. all in all the 245 is the widest one could put on a stock wheel. hope this helps.

I was a question I asked before, Can you run 245? All the info I had said 235 was the widest. But Hoosier does not make a 235. I guess I'll try the 245 in the Spring.
