2015 VW Jetta TDI S DSG
Hi all, my wife has a 2015 VW Jetta TDI CVCA and it has been sitting since March (she works from home now since the pandemic started). I know cars don't like to sit. First, she called me one day and said the car wouldn't start, the battery was shot, so I replaced the battery. Then a few weeks later, I noticed that it was leaking coolant and after removing a couple covers, discovered that it was leaking a steady stream from the water pump. The car has 77k miles, so I figured it might just be due. I ordered a timing belt kit with water pump and the timing belt tool kit from Kerma TDI. I replaced all the idlers, tensioner, serpentine belt, etc. and it all went very well. We decided to take the car for a ride on Sunday and it drove fine for about 100 miles. As we started up a gradual hill, I noticed a distinct skipping feeling and the glow plug light started flashing. We pulled over, took a peek under the hood and all looked normal. Restarted the car and drove it home. On the way home, the check engine light also came on and the car felt like it was now normally aspirated - no boost. I assume it's in some sort of limp mode. I ordered a VCDS that day and pulled the codes today. I'm wondering if maybe I disturbed something or forgot something while changing the timing belt or maybe it's just another symptom of sitting all year. It's right around freezing outside now and the car won't start.

Side note, the car got all the emissions "fixes" at the dealer.

Any input would be much appreciated!
Thanks, Cortlandt

Well that ain't looking good. You may find this thread helpful:

3VWLA7AJ5FM229108
The vehicle has an Extended Emissions Warranty that runs for 11 years or 162,000 miles from the original in-service date. Please see your VW dealership for additional information including the vehicle's in-service date.

I would suggest you contact your local dealer. I don't know what VWoA's current policy is on TDIs but last time I checked, if the MIL is on and you had the updates completed, then everything gets covered under the extended warranty.

Hi Jef, Thanks for the response! I didn’t realize that there is an extended warranty, but that’s good news!

Update: I tried starting the car to move it and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. It appears to be a fried differential exhaust pressure sensor (03L 906 051B). Does anybody know what might have caused this?

Next step is to get it towed to the dealership, but I thought this was odd. The metal tube looks like it got so hot that it started to melt the plastic clamp attached to the timing belt cover, but there is rubber hose between the sensor and metal tube.

I think I found a root cause of melting G505 and G450 sensors.

Just recently I did replace timing belt and of course a water pump.
I also did replace a camshaft oil seal while timing belt was removed but it's another long, fun and complicated story.
Anyway everything went well and in a usual manner including test drive.

On a second day during active driving I started to lose power/boost after 2400 rpm.
Decided to check VCDS and there was only one erased and not important(by VCDS) error tells about low intercooler effectiveness.
P026A 00 [101] - Charge Air Cooler Low Efficiency
No warnings on a car dashboard.
Error cleaned, test drive - boost still absent...

On a 3rd day I decided to make a ride to the garage and check again all things I've touched.
Occasionally I stuck in a traffic and half an hour later my car started to twitch and lose power. Coil sign flashing on a car dashboard.
Of course at the garage under the hood I saw ... actually didn't see my G505(left one) and G450(right one) sensors. Only back side of G450 and only 3 wires of G505 left.
Sensors itself turned into a new plastic cover for the back of my engine.

In my understanding plastic sensor can't melt out totally just due to a wrong work/error/values/etc.
A root cause somewhere behind, so I can't just replace sensors and move on.
Googling provides same results as here - 90% of people who faced with this, did replace timing belt right before the problem.
And no answers, people just asking why and in some cases car dealer just making magic via warranty.

So what's wrong with belt replacement?
Timing? Sensors did melt and plastic hose holders partly. It's something around the wrong temperature.
In case of a wrong timing, piston and valve will met together much faster than the engine will be overheated.
Fuel high pressure pump? Also not. On this engine it has it's own marked position which depends on a camshaft and crankshaft position.
Effect of a wrong position will appear immediately before the test drive.

What's left? - a water pump.
System lost some cooling water. In a common engine with only 2 water circuits you can just start it and fill it in while engine heats.
In EA288 you have a micro circuit with only engine and saloon heater in it (this allows you to seat in a warm car in 3-4 minutes after start at winter), regular 2nd circuit with main radiator and 3rd Low pressure circuit.
Low pressure circuit includes intercooler which cools exhaust, specific of a EA288 engine with water-cooled intercooler.

This is a place where a puzzle came together.
In EA288 complicated schema you can't refill cooling water in a regular manner. Valves, pump with different working positions, opposite flows will not allow to do this.
Intercooler stays empty/dry, of course it will have low effectiveness (cooling effectiveness). As a result - exhaust overheated.
G505 checks exhaust pressure difference, G450 just overall exhaust pressure.
Overheated exhaust moved directly to sensors and did melt them.

That's why ElsaWin says that in each case of water circuits opening on service you need to use program(VCDS or ODIS) to bleed cooling circuits.
And, again by ElsaWin, replaced G505 and G450 should be adopted and their old values should be reset in a car memory.
Scope depends on versions and protocols of VCDS and ECU. I have only G505 adaptation.

Was this lack of bleeding theory ever confirmed?
I'm having the same problem. After timing belt and DSG service this past week, picked up my 2015 Passat from a VW "specialist", check engine light after 3 miles of driving, then about 12 miles later my street is uphill, I lost power and the glow plug light started flashing along with an exclamation point displayed in place of the odometer.
Opened the hood, smelled something plastic or rubber, but it was dark and I assumed maybe the new belts.
The next day engine codes:

Under transmission probably unrelated but I just had the DSG serviced as well, why is this, cruise worked well on the freeway:

U0235 - 000 - - Intermittent

Located the same exhaust pressure sensor as cortsener's melted away.
Will it cause more damage if I limp it 15 miles to the dealer, or do you all recommend towing it?
Can I blame the mechanic that did the work or is this a coincidence?

In my case all is clear, the was a pre-error about low intercooler efficiency and I did replace coolant pump in parallel with timing belt, so I know for sure my mistake. I just didn't replace air with coolant in 3rd micro circuit, where intercooler lives.
I don't know if your "specialist" also touched coolant pump. And another question: did he bleed coolant circuits after?
Error 4087 is about the sensor itself. Ross tech mentioning sensor and it's wires as a root cause. And there were no such error in my case, it's a separate problem by my understanding. Wrong timing made by "specialist" or the sensor is dirty after work like here. By the way also timing belt change and DSG repair was made and G28 by my knowledge placed between engine and DSG.
5158 and 5253 errors not the root cause, just a result of melted sensor. 3 miles of riding... not, I'm 99% it's not possible to melt sensors in 3 miles. I did around 30-40 miles to get my sensor overheat and melt. It's more looks like wrong engine work and quick exhaust overheat as a result(I'm guessing here).
15 miles to a dealer while it did overheat for 3... My luck was I already was on a way to my garage and get to it. By my understanding, you can just overheat the whole engine in case of a ride to a dealer instead of towing and make more affects and things to repair after.

I had it towed to the dealer for warranty fix. The service rep said these are easy to break if somebody just leans on that area. Maybe it's easier to make that mistake since the sensor is covered up. I know someone at Audi who also broke one recently, so now 2 unrelated sources say the same cause.
However, the metal line getting so hot that it melted the plastic does sound mysterious.
