I went through and verified all temperature again, since both thermostats were very close I took the average between them.

opening 178F: need to hold at this temp. for 4 minutes to get this figure

closing 177F: held each thermostat at temperature at 45 degree angle and visually watched it close

watertight 174 F: this corrects the description on picture where I said 165 F.

This test shows the influence of temperature rise. If you follow Bently's procedure to test the accuracy of the opening temperature of the thermostat you will get a incorrect reading even though the thermostat might be brand new.

I show a temperature rise equal to the warm up time of the engine, about 10 minutes in moderate ambient temperatures. The thermostat on average lags 5 degrees the actual temperature of the coolant.

The best way to actually check opening temp. of thermostat is by visually watching it close.
