2005 BEW Timing Belt replacement schedule

I have an 05 Jetta Mark IV (BEW) that I almost never drive anymore. It last had a timing belt replacement in 2012 when it had 150,000 miles, it now has 170,000. The belt looks perfect via a visual inspection. So, my question. I know there is a milage recommendation for the belt change but what about time? As long as the belt looks fine should I worry about it until it hits the recommended milage interval?

There is a time interval too. Miles or time, which ever comes first. It is shorter than 10 years...

VWoA appears to not have provided a time limit for BEW timing belt replacement to ammend their mileage limit.
per Bentley 99~05 Jetta, Golf, GTI manual:
"For those engined where Volkswagen does not specifically recommend a replacement interval, the publisher recommends that the belt be replaced at least every 90k miles or 5 years."
Again, that's the Bentley recommendation in absence of VWAG and/or VWoA time interval information.

You are correct - it was 100k across the board originally. Somewhere right before my second interval it was changed to 80k. About 2 years ago I replaced the original 2006 130k mile belt on a buddy's car and it looked mint. Conversely, I've had one come in with sheared teeth that was much newer with less miles.

My 04 has maybe 30k miles since I did the belt in 2013. I'm not worried about the age.

Your engine has a 130K mile timing belt interval.

When I bought my 2005 Wagon -- with the BEW/"PD" engine-- the timing belt interval, according to available info at the time (early 2006), was 100K.

A few years later, I was told by a recognized TDI "guru" that VW CHANGED that to 80K. I've also seen that interval for BEW-engined TDIs in a number of other places: 80,000 miles (and don't skip it!).

I was working on a 2004 BEW yesterday with only 83k miles. Believed to be original timing belt . He's shopping for one now. I thought the 06 I did 2 years ago with 130+ was overdue!

I know we talked last year or so about yours.... I just did a CBEA (near twin to the CJAA in an Audi A3). I used it as a test run to make sure I had all the tools, etc. I would recommend doing the upgraded lower timing cover with it https://www.idparts.com/upgraded-timing-belt-lower-cover-cbeacjaa-tditbcover-p-14612.html

Just turned over 100,000 miles on my 2014 Sportwagen TDI and am agonizing over whether I'd be taking a chance on going to 120-130,000 before timing belt exchange. A mechanic I spoke to (who is not a specific VW guy) suggested no longer than 105,000; and I know VW says 130,000. But I'm a firm believer in being safe rather than sorry. What do you guys think? Should I split the difference and have it done between 110 and 120? Other than hurting my wallet, does it matter? Should I think twice before having someone other than a V-dub mechanic do it? The more I read about it, the more nervous I get!!! This is my first diesel and I want the Titwillow to outlast me!

There is no magic number, just whatever you're comfortable with. I would proly go with 110k or so.
