2002 A3 1.9 TDi turbos (UK spec)

Hi all, looking for some opinions on replacing the turbo on my A3. I have the chance to get something from a friend of a friend who works at Garrett and i'm wondering 'should i just replace stock for stock or get something with a bit more'?
What is the model number of the stock turbo on the UK A3's?
What are the options for something with a little more poke that don't need huge mods to get them to fit?

Any help or opinions appreciated, abuse less so.

The best drop in turbo on the a3 8l is the gt1749vb from pd150
