2015 Golf Sportwagen TDI S: Airbag error, transmission error, and the unmistakable crunching sound when rotating the steering well. Clearly a broken clock spring. This GSW was a stop sale purchase back in 2017 so I am just outside of the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty (still under 36k). This appears to be a widespread issue, and Volkswagen has issued a warranty extension that includes most models but not the GSW, even though it appears to be the same part: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10149942-9999.pdf

Has anyone else experienced this issue? If it happened outside of your warranty window, were you able to get it replaced free of charge? Who did you have to talk to?

DIY does not appear to be terribly difficult but I don't have a VCDS to reset the airbag light.

I don't know if this can be of any help but my 2011 mk6 CPO came with clockspring coverage for at least one more year, into 2022 I believe and well over 100k. Didn't the mk6 have the VW "fix"? Ill check the exact numbers on the coverage later if that will help?
