Default Engine Management Adaptation Channel Numbers

I have a VCDS cable. I remember not too long ago the adaptation channels had a numerical sequence, and that you had to press the up or down to go through the channels to find the adaptation you wanted, with all of the unused channels in there as well. Like for the engine management, there would be:
Channel 000 N/A
Channel 001 Idle Speed
Channel 002 N/A
Channel 003 IQ
etc.

Now the interface has been updated to just include the usable channels, with no channel numbers. I'm looking for the Engine Management channel numbers, such that I can access them with another scanner.

My friend got a Snap On Solus Pro. It has an adaptation screen, but you must choose a channel from 000-255, and it's a chore to enter each number and confirm, then wait for the screen, see it say N/A and then back out, then reenter a number...
So far 002 is Idle Speed Adjustment, and I gave up getting to 024 with all but 002 N/A. I also haven't been able to find the channel info anywhere online. The Solus user manual, specific for VAG, for adaptation only says 'refer to your VW manual for channels.' I don't see them listed in the Bentley.
Anybody know what the channels are for Engine Management?

Can you please post a full Auto-Scan from the vehicle in question. I think I know what is happening, but I'd like to see the data before I make an official statement.

Regards.

There was some kind of change a while ago. I don't know if it would be worth it to try and find an old version of VCDS but although it has more capability now I haven't been able to do as much as I used to with it lately!

Now it looks like this: https://youtu.be/8hozzgI8ux8

Without some 4 digit code or a security access code I can't get it to do anything other than error out.

VCDS is working. The technology in the vehicles have changed.

https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthr...UDS-Vs-non-UDS

In the video you linked, that ABS module is also UDS, so what is shown is expected. Note, I'd never use a scan tool to try and bleed brakes... it will end in tears.

Keep in mind that VCDS can not force anything to happen, it only sends a request and shows the response from the control module.

Regards.

I wouldn't be trying to activate my ABS if I didn't have to.

I either use the function in that video (that no one has been able to figure out based on forum posts going back at last a couple years) or I guess do some shenanigans in a gravel pit this weekend if I can find one.

I didn't intend my comments to be understood as VCDS actually removing functionality with each update, but rather a user perspective that the UI is becoming less intuitive than what it used to be. While true that software can only report/display/configure anything the modules allow, it's also true that the software developer controls how that information is displayed and interacted with by the end-user.

So yes, blocks and numbers and etc. may have been moved around and altered but the drop down menus that have become more convoluted are entirely within the control of who is designing the software UI.

I think you have missed the point. VAG changed the whole way these things work within their control modules and there is no means by which to do things as they were done prior to the arrival of the UDS protocol. We spent 2 years trying to figure a way to help you, our user, without making things complicated. In frustration, with no better means to communicate the complexities, we reluctantly chose the drop down menu as the best means to do so on the complicated UDS modules.

Are you aware that some of these modules have upwards of 5000 or more settings, adaptations and so on? The complications as Jef rightly said, are the result of the changes VAG has made.

As you use VCDS and are on your way to becoming an expert on all the UDS protocols, we would love to hear your input as to how we might make these complicated procedures less so.

It looks like I didn't miss the point at all. In fact, in this quoted section you admit you got frustrated and simply dumped the contents into drop-down menus leaving the end-user to suffer through the complicated mess.

If you want some practical advice, take a few community college courses in UI design instead of wasting both of our time with your snide commentary aimed at your customer base.

Bizzle, we could continue this rant, but there is little point to doing so. Jef and I understand your view of Ross-Tech's capabilities. We bow to those who possess greater knowledge of software design and all things VAG.

Speaking now to the other members of the forum, know that Ross-Tech will continue to do as we have for the last 19 years. While we are not at the intellectual level of some, we are hard working capable technical engineers. Our real claim to fame is that our team developed tools that allow us to reverse engineer the actions of the controllers in VAG vehicles. Using those tools, our goal has always been to provide an affordable means for the DIY community to interrogate the control modules VAG produces. Owing to the evolution of things automotive, we know the information contained in the vehicles will become more complicated than has been seen on earlier simpler models. Our team will continue their best efforts to try to make the access to the internal information as "easy" as we can. Unfortunately, complex ideas may be difficult to convey especially when the full idea is not shared by the originators for all must bare in mind that Ross-Tech receives no support from the VAG software developers. Certainly we know and accept there will be some who will not find our solutions adequate.

Free enterprise allows others to develop other solutions. There are at present other choices and they have some advantages for particular actions. In the main, we believe you will find there are only two comprehensive tools for working on VAG cars: ODIS from VAG themselves or Ross-Tech's VCDS. ODIS is priced for professional technicians. Comprehensive affordable DIY support for all VAG models since 1995 to present has been Ross-Tech's domain.

Perhaps there will be a new challenger in our future.

Easy guys, put on the thick skin, can we get back to OPs(Jack) issue?
We all appreciate having Ross Tech as part of this community. I'm sure they're open to all suggestions to change/improvements.

I appreciate the help but I won't have access to his car for at least a week. Meanwhile could you please tell me how that will allow him to use the Solus Pro?

I have no support to offer for another scan tool. But getting an Auto-Scan from VCDS posted here will provide a wealth of information so we can see just what we are dealing with.

There can be different steps involves to perform [XYZ]. And there are lots of cases of [XYZ] does not apply to this vehicle. The Germans love the phrase "more than one way to skin a cat" and apply it to all things automotive. To take it a step further, they amended the statement with "... and we have a lot of cats..." The Auto-Scan will let us see what kind of cat we are dealing with and what options might apply to skinning said cat.

Regards.
