ON YOUR MARKS...
GET SET...
A dear friend with the same model year and color just passed by this and immediately called me. Sadly (OH SO FREAKIN' SADLY!), I could not pull off the purchase... ARRRG!
I ask that you please be respectful and call the sellers for any more specific info as I'm in the midst of medical school and just don't have more time to spend on helping a lucky buyer out (thank you, sincerely). Fyi, the local airports are Portland and Bangor, ~ equidistant from Augusta.
Most info that you may require should be included, as well as the sellers' phone numbers!
Where:
Imported Cars, Inc.
Rt. 3
Augusta, Maine
Bob: 207.215.2939 (primary contact)
Ken: 207.215.7581
What:
1996 VW Passat wagon 1.9 liter TDI 5-speed
- One owner, non-smoker
- Garaged
- Rust free, no dings
- Dark blue
- Interior is in good shape, with a few minor blemishes, but absolutely nothing structural or severe, even the headliner's in sweet shape.
- All manuals and dealer maintenance stamps; aside from NH dealership where purchased there has been only one other mechanic (a VW specialist of high regard in central Maine, Mark Kimball in Pittston) who has performed all maintenance since 2002 after the dealer warranty expired
*Check out the pix of the spare tire well (note: the completely DRY & RUST-FREE spare tire well) , as even the dot-matrix sticker pack is STILL ATTACHED... incredible!
- Original window sticker, spare tire, tool kit
- Clean Carfax (no accidents)
- All functions work properly including A/C, sunroof, all lights, power mirrors and locks, wipers, horn, windows (right rear power window was stated as being intermittent)
- Brand new rims and tires, shocks/struts
- Brake pads have more than half left all around
- New timing belt as of 25 (twenty five) miles ago!
- The timing is spot-on (middle, blue line) and there are no computer fault codes (my Vag, not theirs )
- The clutch is claimed to be original but it does not slip in any gear nor rattle at all, even in the high torque curve ranges of 3rd and 4th gears at wide-open-throttle climbing hills
- Shifting/sunchros feel smooth
- Options: Sunroof, 6-disc changer, driver and passenger airbags
- Misc included: spare set of rims and tires, roof rack, tow hitch
- Block heater
- The car has 179,470 original miles, heavily highway driven from Maine to Pennsylvania
- $9,500
The car's story is a good one: The sellers (Imported Cars, Inc.), at the owner's request, retrieved the car new and from a dealer in NH in 1996 and delivered it to central Maine. After 10 years of reliable use (and incredible upkeep!) the owner (now in his 80's) just sold it back to Imported Cars, Inc. to get a smaller Honda hybrid.
I drove this wagon on Saturday and can honestly say that it is nearly without fault. Started right up. It tracks and brakes well w/o pulling. Everything works (including the non-leaking sunroof, A/C, power mirriors and radio/speakers). There are no rattles. It handles very well w/o bobbing or floating.
Only issues that I could find:
- Intake manifold needs cleaning. It's still patent, but well-clogged.
- External radio antenna is attached with tape
- Interior needs a cleaning (not for smell, mind you, just some dirt and small foot-well stains, and some dust)
- Right, rear window motor (maybe)
- Concern about clutch longevity, though it felt absolutely fine to me (and I've driven a bunch of both stock and heavily modded TDI's so know the feel)
- Needs new, braided fuel lines, the present ones appear original.
- If I were buying, I'd do fluids flushes, but all levels are good and not cloudy
- Tidy up the engine bay
BTW, I am not affiliated with any party here, just want to support Fred's as this forum has helped me so much in my years playing with these silly TDI's (though, if you mention my name, I may get some future brownie points or something... maybe even when offering on the Polaris diesel quad that Ken has!)
Oh, & you own me [a] beer if you buy this peach!... OR, do you have 9.5 G's that I may borrow... I SWEAR I'll pay you back in about five or so years!
...and GO!!!!
Peace,
Scotty
