There are three camps
1. VW USA SAYS NO TOWING AND IF YOU DO THERE BE 10,000 LAWYERS FOLLOWING YOU FOREVER.
2. towing 1000 - 1500 lbs you might be ok, but just put bikes on the back
3. Use the Euro or UK specifications 100KG tongue weight and 15-1800 kg (look it up for your car)
4. Tow whatever you can get moving, it'll probably be OK.
Well maybe 4 or more.
You will have to choose for yourself.

I have been looking for hitches for my 3 week old new to me 2012 Passat TDI SEL but this is ridicules. I have a 2005.5 jetta TDI that I tow with all the time up to about 2k/2500lbs with no issue what so ever. I figured that I would be able to tow about 2k with my Passat.

If you choose option 3 then by all means buy the Bosal from ID Parts or a Euro towbar from someone.
This is the only to get the "certified" ability to hang the weight on the car chassis.
The US made tow rigs migh be OK for limited weights etc. but going by the factory designed mounting and load factors is safer.
Remember Euro pounds are much lighter than US pounds. And the Euros tow at no more than 0.005 KPH.
