With the VW stealerships continuing to make this MIX-UP, I think we should be talking about it here. Some dealers have no idea what oil specs are for the new PD!
Good point about the dealers using the wrong oil. And don't you think that VW would have thought of that. And do you really believe in light of the mistakes that can be made by dealers and independent service centers and by owners themselves that VW would make an engine that could be so easily damaged. I can't believe that they would and if they did they would already be experiencing big reliability problems. I think all of you are blowing this out of proportion. Yes use the oil proscribed by VW, but if a mistake is made once as in BobH's case or you happen to top up with the wrong oil don't expect a disaster to happen.

If these dire consequesces were to occur under these circumstances, VW would have pulled the PD engine long ago.

Not to throw another monkey wrench into the works...

But if this ever went to court over a failed engine, I can just see them (VWoA lawyers that is) wiggle out of the warranty because you, the owner, failed to read the invoice and notice the wrong oil before driving off of the service lot.
Am I supposed to verify correct timing before turning on the engine after a TB change? You pay them to do a job correctly and should definitely NOT have to second guess all the work done by them. That is really the whole point of having work done, isn't it?

correct !!

when we go to a Dr. do we anayze his invoice and second guess it? No, most of us do not understand medical terms and are not required to. That is why we hire a Dr.
Same principal when we hire VW

Well, fortunately, most Doctors do not have VW's horrible track record of screwing something up royally! With all the horror stories I have read on this site and my own personal experiences with VW dealers, yes, I would question if they perhaps did do a correct job in an involved proceedure. Unfortunate, but that is the way it is. Doctors also have more incentive to get it right, there is more accountability and responsibility. I do not feel the same is true in auto repair.

Note: Please realise that I am generalising and that there are exceptions to everything

Is the 505-01 specification oil only available in one liter containers? This is VW part # G052167A2. My reason for this question is that the dealer that services my car is in Washington state and they have what they call 505-01 in bulk. The Castrol truck fills their dispenser from a 55 gallon drum. They do not have the oil in liter containers. What are people doing to verify that the correct oil is being used? Is it necessary to demand that they show you the 505-01 on the container before an oil change? Then watch that that oil is being used in your car. The car has not had an oil change yet. Thanks for any response.
