I've decided to keep my Blue Bomber (2001 New Beetle TDI) so I need to replace some parts: driver's side seat back (leather), radio replacement (the heat down here in New Orleans got to the dial and it's turning black) and left side/driver's sidedoor panel (peeling away).
Also:
- Any advice on the dark gray foamy materials that came blowing out when I used my A/C?
- How to get the film off of my dash now that it has scratches through it?

I still get 48 MPG on the highway, and 33 MPG in the City (rolling).

Never heard of this before. Check on your air filter under hood and also the cabin filter. Maybe time to replace them? Look around where the main air filter is...maybe something is in there? Foamy you say? Like the packaging peanuts used in shipping stuff?? If air filters are both good, I would have to say something inside the air ducts.

Keep it! There are so few of us out there! I have a blue one too, with a manual transmission, and had the air filter replaced as soon as I got it. It has always had an odd crayon smell, but blows no weird things from the AC. My current issue is with the glow plugs (just replaced @$430.00) and the relay switch, (not replaced yet). My check engine light is on, but the mechanic says no big deal, and the glow plug stays on a long time and blinks red on below freezing days, but runs like a champ. Good luck with the AC.

The grey foamy material is the duct and flapper door sealing foam tape that is starting to degrade
happens on many older cars...you can remove your vents and let most of if pass or take your dash apart and clean the ducts and replace it...
