Just trying to decide which way to go. Have a 2003 Jetta TDI w/90,000mi and might be interested in someting bigger. Any news if the Passat TDI is in the US future ?

Nothing of the sort has been ANNOUNCED. This does not imply that it will never happen - only that no such thing has been announced. Auto makers generally do not like giving out TOO much information about what is coming in the future.

Have you looked at an A5 Jetta? That is a sure deal (Feb - March 2008 availability) and you'll find that it has quite a bit more interior room, particularly rear legroom, than your A4. And you will be able to get a wagon version, although that will be delayed-introduction.

Or if you MUST get a Passat...there are worse gas engines out there than the 2.0T. Yes it uses premium, but 35 mpg on the highway is doable at speeds that get you about 42 mpg on a B5.5 Passat TDI. With the 70 liter tank, I have gotten 900 km (563 miles) per tank on road trips and typically break 800 (500 miles) in just routine driving; my overall average is running at about 31 mpg right now. That's not a huge difference compared to the TDI, but dang those 200 ponies are fun when they get frisky! I have to say that while I like the build quality on our B5.5 better (better quality materials, fewer interior creaks/rattles), the B6 has much superior handling. With the 6-speed stick, it is also loads more fun than a Tiptronic TDI...

That said, GoFaster's advice is great if you must have a TDI. I have driven a 140 hp TDI, 6-speed manual in the UK (in a Seat Altea). Although it was a PD and the newer CR will be more efficient, it had gobs of torque and plenty of power; the fuel economy was a bit disappointing though, only about 37 mpg...not much different than my 2.0T, but I drove it hard and the UK traffic is nothing like here.

70 liters is 18.5 gallons so therefore your overall MPGs are 500/18.5 = 27 MPG and your HWY MPGs are 563/18.5= 30.4 MPG which makes sense if you consder the EPA rating on that vehicle.

Umm, I don't burn through the entire 70 liters...I don't feel like pushing my car!!! I rather prefer refuelling when I have about 5 liters left. To be precise, if I drive normally, I can make it to just over 800 km on a single tank in daily driving but I will refill anytime it is convenient between 700 and 800 km.

I have a spread sheet of my mileage...my summer average has been 30.1 mpg US, and has been running closer to 31 in the last few weeks. That gives a theoretical range of 825 km per tank leaving a 5 liter reserve. On my last road trip, when I got 900 km, I had exactly 5 liters left...so I burned 65 liters which is 17.15 gallons, which gives 32.8 mpg; driven at 100-105 km/h on two lane roads, and 120 km/h on 4 lanes.
