Will 6-disc changer play MP3 off DVD-R ?

Not diesel-related, per se. I know one could stick in an SD card with music etc, certainly recording of MP3s to a regualar CD blank would work.

But can a cheap-skate record those MP3 files to DVD-R (+R) - this way you get 4.7GB of space, vs 700MB, and have stock VW 6-disc changer play it ?

Most of my music is on my phone (48GB of space on it), this way I can drive VW or my other car and have my music go with me. However, when phone is not with me or is discharged, would be nice to have a fallback media

There seems to be a common theme that the oem head units will accept dvd's but are very particular about mp3 data format. Cd changers usually don't accept any dvd's and that really sucks.

Here is a thread from Benzworld about mp3's that is a little dated but the principles should still apply. There is a lot of equipment/hardware crossover between MB & VW and they are out to make a buck so they keep the changers simple and give us ipod/usb interfaces.

I tried all sorts of methods and wound up burning 7 mp3 cds. 6 with 99 tracks and one with over 99 tracks and nearly 700mb for the headunit.

I hear you on this. Here is what I did and it looks great for me.

I uploaded my whole music collection (about 10k songs) to Google Music (for free, they will host up to 20k). Downloaded the GMusic app for $1.99 from the App Store. Then once it synced, I just play it through the BT audio. I have all my music right on my iPhone at my disposal through the Google cloud. Sometimes it can be quirky but 95% of the time I just put an album on, and stick the iphone in the console.

You will be able to control track +/- and play/pause straight from the head unit.

One caveat is that streaming the music over 3g/4g can run up your data usage. I get my phone through work so there are no data constraints.

Way to suck up the bandwidth... what a waste of resources. Buy some SD cards, load your files on there, and play away.

Oh sorry I did not know the data police were here. I will stop streaing my music so you can cruise YouTube videos and play Angry Birds faster. How selfish of me to not consider other people's bandwidths!!!! If your definition of "wasting resources" equals the following that is exactly what he should do:

1.) Blowing a money on SD cards vs. a free service
2.) Not being able to access the content worldwide
3.) Ignoring efficient management of your music in one place
4.) Live like it is 2004

What does your owners manual say? "IF" MP3 via DVDs is supported, it will take at least 10 discs for your collection, or 5 if dual layer supported. I'm not the DVD Police, but SD is more ideal if you can get over the cost. Besides, all the streaming will shorten life of the PITA to remove iPhone battery.

According to Chitty's buyers guide the answer is, NO!

For my '05 MB I ordered the factory ipod interface and plan to use my old iPhone 3gs 32gb for music only. Basically turned it into a 32gb touch. I already arranged a dozen or so different playlists so I have some variety. Lock the iPhone in the glove box and forget about it.

For burning mp3 cd's the rule of thumb is changers are limited to 99 tracks, regardless of how many you put on the disc they will only read the first 99. Head units will have ~ 255 track/folder limit. Don't load album art in the id tags, results in disc read errors. You may need to strip all tags. I would try a dvd test or two and see if the head unit will read them. Otherwise you are stuck with a 700 mb cd in the head unit.

Edit: After reading the guide I see you only have a changer (The car I checked out had the 510gps), it is possible the changer will accept more than 99 tracks/folders. I would burn a test disc to see. Since you don't have nav the chance of dvd reading is probably nill. Those in dash dvd players usually support mp3 dvd's even though they don't specifically state it.
