2005 Wisconsin TDI Fest Proposal - DRAFT

I'm considering putting together a proposal for Wisconsin, and am looking for other participants that would be interested in helping with the proposal. I would also be open to helping with a MN or Chicago area proposal.

Ideally, I'd like to see the Fest moved a few weeks later in the year as Labor Day Weekend is often a time for friends/family. My initial thinking was Wisconsin Dells as a location. After Labor Day weekend the tourism dies quick, and we should be able to get a nice deal. It would also make the Fest a more family oriented experience. Think Kalahari Hotel. There are many hotels in the area that should make it easy to find a good deal. Plus there are many other activities in the area that would be appealing: brewery tours, Devil's lake state park(camping), casino's, race tracks, Big Chief Go Cart, etc.

I'm open to any comments or suggestions.

Closer to the geographical center of the US, everyone would be inconvenienced equally, I think it makes sense.

Sounds like a great idea! Kenosha or Racine would be neat.
It would be really nice to find a farmer who would be willing to rent some land in order to hold a large TDI fest along with parking. My .02 would be to rent/lease the farm-site in the Amana colonies (near Iowa City IA) where the Farm Progress Show has been held in years past. The site is all set up for holding very large outdoor events and shows. The water, sewer, electrical hook ups and space is already in place and has been home to the farm progress show on many occasions. It would be nice to approach VW North America to see if they would be interested in joining us and kicking off the introduction of their new 2006 models.

Iowa City, Corralville and Cedar Rapids are all in the nrar proximity to the Colonies and have plenty of infrastructure.
You can even purchase Biodiesel in Iowa City.

Thanks

PS. I think the Midwest (Iowa) would be a great idea, because of the central location in North America.
Any Iowans want to help put a proposal together??

A midwest TDIFest mightn't be all that bad of an idea at all. A centrally located state such as Iowa is anot that bad of a drive for most of the members, even Wisconsin would be great. I would be more inclined to come to a fest that is a 10-14hr drive than one located on a coastal location..... there are probably other members in MB, SK, and AB that would be more interested in a central location as well. I like this idea!

I think Iowa City would be a fine location. Not too far west for those on the East Coast, not too far north for those in Texas, not too far east for those in Colorado. Maybe a little far from Montreal or the Maritime Provinces, though.

I've made two round trips to Iowa from SoCal in the last year. It would be better with a relief driver, but it's not bad at all.

The major problem, I think, is for those who would fly in. Very few direct flights to Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, so few discount airfares. So somewhere close to Chicago, St Louis, or Indianapolis might be better. (St Louis might be an attractive site, to get folks from Texas and the Gulf Coast to attend.) Personally, I can see myself attending a TDI FEST in Detroit or Columbus Ohio, but probably not further east than that.

I think a midwest location would be great too. Let me put in a plug for Columbus, Ohio. We have great car shows/gatherings here with the NSRA, Goodguys, and Mopar Nationals. One year the streetrod boys had an estimated 14,000 cars here over a two-week period. All of the hotels, restaurants, and infrastructure is here for such an event.

I understand you can't hold a FEST if there are no members there to organize it.

But I can offer my vast knowledge of geography, in suggesting possible sites... and then when everyone says "Of course, why didn't we think of holding the FEST __there__?" that's when the folks who live __there__ say okay.

Heck, there's a newbie in Huntington WV whose husband is a beer distributor. I nominate Huntington WV for the next TDI FEST!

I am all for helping Edward put a proposal together, but I know he will need help. You are talking about one heck of a major undertaking organizing a big North American TDI event. I am all for a Midwestern event for 2005 and I am willing to help.

I would prefer IL, IA, or WI for the central location. I know the Madison TDI'ers are a pretty active bunch and Ed organizes a nice GTG in Lake Mills every year. His big event this year is 10-02-04. Just voicing my willingness to help and put my MBA and vast contacts to work.

Those interested in putting together a proposal for WI, please consider attending the Oct 2 GTG in Lake Mills. Many of the interested parties are already attending the GTG, and it will give us access to a whole group of people to bounce ideas off of.

See you on Oct 02-2004 in Lake Mills WI. I am looking forward to discussing a possible proposal for a 2005 TDI Fest in the Midwest (IA, IL or WI)

Thanks

I'd add some graphics, but since I'm hosting this on a free server, the speed is already pretty pathetic. No need to throw in a bunch of pictures and clog it even more. Plus, this is still in Draft form, I'd like to get some more feedback and input (rather than me putting together the whole proposal!)

I might be able to help with the PowerPoint issue. If you create the PP file, I'll post it on my website for you and provide the link. I have webspace available through my ISP and would be happy to donate it to such a great event. Let me know.
If I can be of help in any other way as well, let me know. I am not local to you but have good computer skills and a wide range of graphic software which I can do from anywhere.

Oh yeh, I'm not sure who created the 04 PP file but they should have used spell check or looked on a map to find out how to spell Plymouth !!

The name of the reconstructed village, with period interpreters re-living daily life of 1622 and using the language spoken there 385 years ago, is correctly spelled with the 385 year old spelling. The remaining piece of the rock on which they first set foot when they disembarked on these shores (they only anchored at what became Provincetown) may be spelled Plimoth or Plymouth. Both are in the town with the more modernized spelling of Plymouth.

I think a midwest Fest would be a great idea. Sounds like it'd be a bit more accessible for Canadians and others around the US. I'll help any way I can.

I am up for a milwaukee TDIFEST. Then I could kill 2 birds with one stone. I would be able to go home and see my family and friends, and also do the FEST. That is a great idea. Heck if its held there, i would help you guys out as much as i could.

Reading this thread and I had a rather large brainfart!

What about using the Racine county fairgrounds for TDIFest in Union Grove. Its close enough to Milwaukee and Chicago for touristy things, also less than a mile to the Great Lakes Dragaway for those who want to race their modded beauties!

I placed a call into the Village Administrator about the process for reserving the fairgrounds and will post a follow up later.

Kingjr3, PLEASE, do not hold, book or do anything other than gather information at this point in time. We are only "proposing" the TDI fest be held here in the Midwest. In reality, we are considering holding it near the Wisconsin Dells area (please read the thread) However, we have to lay our proposal out on the table just like "bidding" if you will, on an auction item. That deadline is drawing near so we put a feeler out to see what people thought about holding the TDI FEST here in the Wisconsin area. Thanks for your encouragement and your enthusiasm is appreciated. Hopefully, if all goes well the TDI Fest will be held right in our own back yard for all TDI enthusiasts to see what a GREAT state/area we have. Thanks and we'll keep you posted. Later, J

I attended the TDIfest in Michigan, but could not attend the fest on the east coast this year because of the distance.

I would especially like a family oriented location, like a hotel with indoor waterpark. I would probably plan a family vacation around the fest.

I would definitely attend if fest was located in WI, IL, IN...MIDWEST.

PS.
I went to the Lake Mills, WI GTG and it was quite nice. Ed had everything set up as described. I was very comfortable with working on my car in a "shop", as opposed to a parking lot (although people did work in the parking lot). I had a sense of security given that other TDI enthusiasts were close to answer any questions.

Comments/suggestions anyone? I really would like some input from those that would be interested in attending.

I am still looking for other members who may be interested in planning/organizing this event.

I have already put significant time into the Wisconsin Dells Proposal. If anyone wishes to pursue another location they should do the leg work to put together a draft proposal. If multiple proposal originate for the WI/midwest, then maybe at that point we should decide which direction is best for all. But at this point I will only be working on the Dells proposal.
