Why no TDI ads?

Pure speculation of course but could this be related to not wanting to sell too many for emissions reasons? Or in light of more recent discussions could VW actually know that their track record on service of our TDIs is pitiful and they don't want more headaches?
I notice that in spite of currently cheap gas Honda is now running some ads for the HX again.
What do you think?

VWOA restricts TDIs to around 25,000 a year due to EPA limits. Demand is such that they all sell without national advertising. Local dealers in this area do promote the TDI on radio and in newspaper ads.

The latest VW ads I've seen really suck. I like the old ads from the late 60s and 70s. They were great. I think they(VWoA) should make a TV ad where the people, say a couple are going on a trip. They pass the first fuel stop and the passenger asks the driver if they need fuel. The driver says the tank is full. A road sign appears saying next fuel stop 200 miles. Next scene they're passing this fuel stop and another road sign appears saying next fuel stop 200 miles. Again they pass this stop and another road sign says next fuel stop 100 miles. Finally they get to this stop and they race into the station. Jump out of the car and race to the restroom. They get back in the car and take off, not refuelling. The passenger asks the driver how much fuel they have. He/she replys "enough" and another road sign appears saying next fuel stop 100 miles. Then a voice over saying something that you'll need to stop before your car will need fuel. Hey VWoA use this story line!!!!!

Came across a full-page TDI ad recently in a Virginia Department of Transportation booklet entitled "Virginia Bicycling Guide 2001-2002."

There's a smallish frontal shot of a Jetta in the middle of the page, with lots of white space around it like in the old 60's ads. Under the Jetta grill shot, there's the caption "Ha. Filling stations! I mock you!"

At the bottom of the page is a TDI mileage box (42/49) and some 10-point type ad copy about driving 710 miles on a single tank of diesel fuel, and how diesel technology has advanced, blah blah . . .

The copyright notation says "copyright 2000 Volkswagen," so it looks like a VWoA ad.

Actually, I think that's pretty interesting that they would advertise in a bicycling guide. I guess VW has no great need to advertise if they can sell all the TDIs there are and that's probably especially true in the NE. I would just like to believe that a few more people would drive a car that gets 50 mpg if they knew it existed.

Here in Fitchburg MA we get CDN Television - CKSH/Sherbrooke (CBC in French).
I've seen VW TDI ads on this channel a couple of times. But never a commercial "stateside".
BTW I just got the latest issue of Volkswagen Driver, Vol 39 Nr. 2; there is an article entitled "Going the Distance" on pages 26 and 27, which highlights the economical TDI.

maybe they don't advertise TDI's because of emissions, but the impression i got was that VWoA doesn't make nearly as much money off a TDI sale as a gasser.

from what i've been reading, it looks like the TDI burns a little cleaner than it's equivalent gasser, *except* for SOx compounds. and ultra low sulfer diesel is supposed to be available at the pump by 2006. or you can just make your own biodiesel, which has none (or maybe a negligable amount).

Cool Ad! I don't know if I can HOLD for 710 miles! Maybe 400? 710 miles is exact the number from my mothers house in WI to my college in NY. So that makes it about 12 hour drive, 70mph avg.

Eric, my pleasure.

We are going to have one more GTG this year and are planning it for early December. Are you going to be up for it??
